What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)? PCOS is a common hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. Characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, excess androgen levels, and polycystic ovaries. Affects approximately 10% of women worldwide (Teede et al., 2018). Reference: Teede, H. J., et al. (2018). "Recommendations from the international evidence-based guideline for the assessment and management of polycystic ovary syndrome." Human Reproduction, 33(9), 1602-1618.
Slide 4-

Epidemiology of PCOS PCOS prevalence: affects 6-12% of women globally (Zhao et al., 2020). Higher prevalence in women with obesity and those with family history. Variation in prevalence due to differences in diagnostic criteria. Reference: Zhao, X., et al. (2020). "Prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome in women in China: A large community-based study." Human Reproduction, 35(6), 1306-1315.

Pathophysiology of PCOS Insulin Resistance: Elevated insulin levels contribute to increased androgen production. Hormonal Imbalance: Excess luteinizing hormone (LH) and low follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) affect ovulation. Inflammation: Chronic low-grade inflammation may play a role (Azziz et al., 2016). Reference: Azziz, R., et al. (2016). "Polycystic ovary syndrome." Nature Reviews Disease Primers, 2, 16057.

Common Symptoms of PCOS Irregular Periods: Infrequent, prolonged, or absent menstrual cycles. Excess Androgens: Hirsutism (excess hair growth), acne, and alopecia. Polycystic Ovaries: Multiple small cysts on the ovaries. Additional Symptoms: Weight gain, insulin resistance, and fertility issues (Fauser et al., 2012). Reference: Fauser, B. C., et al. (2012). "Consensus on women's health aspects of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): The Amsterdam ESHRE/ASRM-Sponsored 3rd PCOS Consensus Workshop Group." Fertility and Sterility, 97(1), 28-38.

Causes and Risk Factors of PCOS Genetic Factors: PCOS tends to run in families. Environmental Factors: Diet and lifestyle may exacerbate symptoms. Insulin Resistance: Major contributing factor (Diamanti-Kandarakis & Dunaif, 2012). Reference: Diamanti-Kandarakis, E., & Dunaif, A. (2012). "Insulin resistance and the polycystic ovary syndrome revisited: An update on mechanisms and implications." Endocrine Reviews, 33(6), 981-1030.

How is PCOS Diagnosed? Diagnosis based on Rotterdam criteria (2003): Two of three criteria required: Irregular periods Clinical or biochemical signs of hyperandrogenism Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound Other tests: Blood tests for androgen and insulin levels, pelvic ultrasound (Rotterdam ESHRE/ASRM-Sponsored PCOS Consensus, 2003). Reference: Rotterdam ESHRE/ASRM-Sponsored PCOS Consensus Workshop Group. (2003). "Revised 2003 consensus on diagnostic criteria and long-term health risks related to polycystic ovary syndrome." Fertility and Sterility, 81(1), 19-25.
Slide 9-

Long-term Health Risks and Complications Type 2 Diabetes: Increased risk due to insulin resistance. Cardiovascular Disease: Elevated blood pressure and cholesterol. Endometrial Cancer: Risk due to irregular menstrual cycles. Mental Health Issues: Increased risk of anxiety, depression (Legro et al., 2013). Reference: Legro, R. S., et al. (2013). "Diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome: An Endocrine Society clinical practice guideline." The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 98(12), 4565-4592.

Treatment Options for PCOS Lifestyle Changes: Diet, exercise, and weight management. Medications: Hormonal Contraceptives: Regulate periods and reduce androgen levels. Metformin: Improves insulin sensitivity. Anti-androgens: For hirsutism and acne (Teede et al., 2018). Fertility Treatments: Clomiphene citrate, letrozole, or IVF if needed. Reference: Teede, H. J., et al. (2018). "Recommendations from the international evidence-based guideline for the assessment and management of polycystic ovary syndrome." Human Reproduction, 33(9), 1602-1618.
Slide 11-

Lifestyle Modifications Diet: Low glycemic index foods, balanced diet rich in fiber and protein. Exercise: Regular physical activity to manage weight and insulin resistance. Mental Health Support: Stress management and counseling if needed (Harrison et al., 2019). Reference: Harrison, C. L., et al. (2019). "Exercise therapy in polycystic ovary syndrome: A systematic review." Human Reproduction Update, 25(2), 224-249.
Slide 12-

Recent Advances in PCOS Research New insights into genetic links and epigenetics. Development of novel treatments targeting insulin resistance. Ongoing studies exploring the role of lifestyle interventions (Escobar-Morreale, 2018). Reference: Escobar-Morreale, H. F. (2018).
