About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Paget’s Disease of Bone” by Ethel S. Siris and G. David Roodman.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about Pagets disease of bone, also known as osteitis deformans. Pagets disease of bone is a chronic bone disorder characterized by the abnormal breakdown and formation of bone tissue, leading to weakened and deformed bones.

The disease typically affects the elderly population, and the exact cause is unknown, although genetic and environmental factors are believed to play a role.

Symptoms may include bone pain, joint stiffness, deformities, and fractures. In some cases, the disease may be asymptomatic and only detected through routine X-rays or blood tests.

There is no cure for Pagets disease of bone, but treatment can help alleviate symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Medications such as bisphosphonates and calcitonin can help regulate bone turnover, and surgery may be necessary in cases of severe bone deformity or fracture. Regular monitoring and management of the disease are essential to prevent complications.

Slide 2-

Figure 1 Figure 1 Scanning electron micrographs with sections of normal bone (left) and pagetic bone (right). Both samples were taken from the iliac crest. The normal bone shows the trabecular plates and marrow spaces to be well preserved, whereas the pagetic bone has completely lost this architectural appearance. Extensive pitting of the pagetic bone is apparent caused by dramatically increased osteoclastic bone resorption.
