What is Obstetrics? Obstetrics is a branch of medicine focused on pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Deals with maternal and fetal health, ensuring a safe delivery and recovery process. Integral part of women's reproductive healthcare. Speaker Notes: Obstetrics is dedicated to managing all aspects of pregnancy, from prenatal to postnatal care. It ensures the health of both the mother and baby, providing preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic support. Reference: Cunningham, F. G., Leveno, K. J., Bloom, S. L., et al. (2018). Williams Obstetrics, 25th Edition. McGraw-Hill Education.

Key Stages of Pregnancy First Trimester (0-13 weeks): Fetal development begins, prenatal screenings. Second Trimester (14-26 weeks): Growth, anatomy scan, movement felt. Third Trimester (27-40 weeks): Final growth, birth preparation, positioning. Speaker Notes: Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each marked by specific developmental milestones. Obstetric care includes regular check-ups and screenings in each stage to monitor the health of both mother and baby. Reference: Moore, K. L., Persaud, T. V. N., & Torchia, M. G. (2018). Before We Are Born: Essentials of Embryology and Birth Defects. Elsevier.
Slide 5-

Prenatal Care Regular check-ups to monitor maternal and fetal health. Screening tests (ultrasounds, blood tests). Lifestyle guidance on nutrition, exercise, and supplements (e.g., folic acid). Immunizations to protect against infections (e.g., flu, Tdap). Speaker Notes: Prenatal care involves regular visits to monitor the health of the mother and fetus. It includes necessary tests, immunizations, and lifestyle recommendations to promote a healthy pregnancy. Reference: ACOG (2019). Guidelines for Perinatal Care. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Common Pregnancy Complications Gestational Diabetes: Blood sugar issues managed with diet, exercise, medication. Preeclampsia: High blood pressure, protein in urine; may require early delivery. Placenta Previa: Placenta covers cervix; managed with bed rest or C-section. Preterm Labor: Labor before 37 weeks, interventions to delay birth. Speaker Notes: Some pregnancies involve complications that require specialized care to ensure the safety of both mother and baby. Obstetricians manage these conditions with treatments, lifestyle changes, or, in some cases, early delivery. Reference: Cunningham, F. G., Leveno, K. J., Bloom, S. L., et al. (2018). Williams Obstetrics, 25th Edition. McGraw-Hill Education.

Labor and Delivery Process Stages of Labor: Stage 1: Dilation of cervix, early and active labor phases. Stage 2: Delivery of the baby. Stage 3: Delivery of the placenta. Pain management options (epidurals, natural techniques). Continuous monitoring of maternal and fetal well-being. Speaker Notes: Labor progresses in three stages, from dilation to the delivery of the placenta. Obstetric care during labor ensures that the mother and baby are safe and that any necessary interventions are provided promptly. Reference: World Health Organization (2018). Intrapartum care for a positive childbirth experience. WHO.

Types of Delivery Vaginal Delivery: Natural delivery through the birth canal. Cesarean Section (C-section): Surgical procedure when vaginal delivery isn't safe. Assisted Delivery: Use of tools (forceps, vacuum) when additional assistance is needed. Speaker Notes: While vaginal delivery is the most common method, some cases may require a C-section or assisted delivery for the safety of mother and child. Reference: American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. (2021). Types of Delivery and When They Are Used. ACOG.
Slide 9-

Postpartum Care and Recovery Physical recovery (bleeding, uterus involution). Mental health support (screening for postpartum depression). Breastfeeding and lactation counseling. Postpartum check-ups and family planning. Speaker Notes: Postpartum care includes physical and mental health recovery, as well as support for breastfeeding. Regular check-ups ensure the mother’s health and address any complications that arise after childbirth. Reference: Ko, J. Y., Rockhill, K. M., Tong, V. T., et al. (2017). Trends in Postpartum Depressive Symptoms - 27 States, 2004, 2008, and 2012. MMWR. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
Slide 10-

High-Risk Pregnancy Management Identification of risk factors (age, pre-existing conditions). Specialized prenatal care and frequent monitoring. Multidisciplinary team approach for complex cases. Management of preterm labor, gestational diabetes, and hypertension. Speaker Notes: High-risk pregnancies require extra monitoring and specialized care to mitigate risks. Obstetricians work closely with other specialists to ensure the best outcomes. Reference: March of Dimes (2020). Care and Management of High-Risk Pregnancies.
Slide 11-

Fetal Monitoring and Health Assessment Non-stress tests and biophysical profiles. Ultrasound for fetal development and positioning. Doppler ultrasound for blood flow assessment. Amniocentesis and CVS for genetic screening. Speaker Notes: Fetal monitoring provides insight into fetal health and development, guiding decisions regarding the timing and mode of delivery when complications arise. Reference: American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) (2019). Practice Guidelines for Obstetrical Ultrasound Examinations.
