Copper & Selenium Peciller, Pelletier, Ragui, Ritchil, Salmeo
Slide 2-

Characteristics of Copper One of a relatively small group of metallic elements which are essential to human health. These elements, along with amino and fatty acids as well as vitamins, are required for normal metabolic processes. However, as the body cannot synthesize copper, the human diet must supply regular amounts for absorption.
Slide 3-

Functions of Copper An essential trace mineral necessary for survival. Found in all body tissues and plays a role in making red blood cells and maintaining nerve cells and the immune system. Works with iron to help the body form red blood cells. It Also helps keep the blood vessels, nerves, immune system, and bones healthy. Also aids in iron absorption.
Slide 4-

Requirement for Copper The recommended daily allowance (RDA) is around 900 micrograms (mcg) a day for adolescents and adults. The upper limit for adults aged 19 years and above is 10,000 mcg, or 10 milligrams (mg) a day. An intake above this level could be toxic. Both copper deficiency and copper toxicity are rare in the United States (U.S).
Slide 5-

Copper Absorption & Excretion In mammals copper is absorbed in the stomach and small intestine, although there appear to be differences among species with respect to the site of maximal absorption. Most of the copper (70 – 95%) excreted by the liver is incorporated into ceruloplasmin, the main copper carrier in blood. Copper is transported to extra-hepatic tissues by ceruloplasmin, albumin and amino acids, or excreted into the bile.
Slide 6-

Toxicity Copper toxicity is a type of metal poisoning caused by an excess of copper in the body. Copperiedus can occur from eating acidic foods cooked in uncoated copper cookware, or from exposure to excess copper in drinking water or other environmental sources.
Slide 7-

Deficiency Fatigue and Weakness Frequent Sickness Weak and Brittle Bones Problems With Memory & Learning Difficulties Walking Neuropathy Sensitivity to Cold Pale Skin Premature Gray Hair Vision Loss Anemia
Slide 8-

Sources of Copper Liver (Organ meats) Oysters Spirulina Shiitake Mushrooms Nuts and Seeds Lobster Leafy Greens Dark Chocolate
Slide 9-

Characteristics of Selenium A trace mineral found in the soil that is actually quite rare but important for many bodily processes. Naturally appears in water and some foods. Contributes to healthy immune function, DNA synthesis, reproductive health and thyroid hormone synthesis. This mineral also protects against certain illnesses and is necessary for good health. The human body only needs it in small, frequent amounts.
Slide 10-

Functions of Selenium Acts as an Antioxidant and Defends Against Oxidative Stress May Help Defend Against Cancer Boosts Immunity Improves Blood Flow and Lowers Chance of Heart Disease Regulates Thyroid Function Increases Longevity Helps Reduce Asthma Symptoms Can Help Boost Fertility

Slide 12-

Selenium Absorption & Excretion Selenium is absorbed mainly from the duodenum. Selenium is better absorbed from a high-protein diet. Selenium after absorption is transported to plasma proteins particularly β-lipoproteins in humans. Main route of excretion of Selenium appears to be through urine. Excreted also in feces, and by other routes, which include exhaled breath and loss of hair and skin cells.
Slide 13-

Toxicity Selenium toxicity is rare. Selenosis is the toxicity due to excessive consumption of selenium, Clinical features are hair loss, dermatitis, fatigue, irritability, garlic breath odor, gastrointestinal distress Liver and neuromuscular disorders that are usually fatal.
Slide 14-

Deficiency Keshan disease- potentially fatal form of cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart muscle). Muscular dystrophy, loss of appetite, nausea Skeletal myopathy
