Slide 1-

Periodontal Response to External Forces Chapter 25
Slide 2-

Adaptive Capacity of the Periodontium to Occlusal Forces Cushioning effect on forces → Accommodating forces Elastic nature of PDL → Physiologic mobility Absence of excessive occlusal forces or AL → Unchanged mobility Increase in occlusal forces → Changes occur in the periodontium
Slide 3-

Adaptive Capacity of the Periodontium to Occlusal Forces Increase in magnitude Widening (PDL space) Increase in number & width (ligaments) Increase in density (bone) Change in direction Reorientation of the stresses & strains Principal fibers(fig 25.1) Forces along the long axis (best accommodation) Lateral & torque forces (more likely to injure) Response of alveolar bone Duration of forces (constant vs intermittent) Frequency (the more frequent, the more injurious)
Slide 4-

Adaptive Capacity of the Periodontium to Occlusal Forces
Slide 5-

Trauma From Occlusion Alterations of PDL (microscopic) → Elevation of mobility (clinically) Tissue injury rather than the occlusal force Trauma from occlusion = Occlusal trauma ≠ Traumatic occlusion Traumatic occlusion PDL injury (generally used in connection with) Disrupt the function of masticatory musculature Painful spasms TMJ injury Excessive tooth wear
Slide 6-

Classification of Trauma From Occlusion Mode of onset Acute chronic Resistance of periodontium Primary secondary
Slide 7-

Acute and Chronic Trauma From Occlusion Acute trauma An abrupt occlusal impact Results Tooth pain Sensitivity to percussion Increased tooth mobility Healing Position of tooth Wearing away / correction of restoration
