About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Care of a normal baby at birth”.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about taking care of a newborn which can be challenging, but also rewarding. The care of a newborn baby in the first hour after birth is critical to ensure the babys health and well-being. Here are some important steps that should be taken:

Drying and Warming: The baby should be dried with a clean towel and placed under a warmer or skin-to-skin with the mother to help maintain a normal body temperature.
Assessment: The babys vital signs, such as heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature, should be checked. Apgar score, a test to assess the babys overall health and well-being, is usually performed within the first minute after birth and again at 5 minutes.
Airway Clearance: The babys airway should be cleared of any mucus or fluids to help the baby breathe freely. If the baby is not breathing on their own, stimulation or suction may be necessary.
Eye Care: The eyes should be wiped clean with a sterile saline solution or clean water to prevent infection. If the mother is infected with certain sexually transmitted diseases, additional medications may need to be applied to the babys eyes.
Skin-to-skin contact: Placing the baby skin-to-skin with the mother has numerous benefits, including regulating the babys temperature, stabilizing their heart rate and breathing, and promoting breastfeeding.
Cord Clamping: Delayed cord clamping (waiting for 1-2 minutes after birth) is recommended as it helps to transfer extra blood and nutrients from the placenta to the baby.
Identification and Security: After birth, the baby is usually given identification bracelets and security measures to ensure the babys safety while in the hospital.

These are some of the critical steps involved in the care of a newborn baby in the first hour after birth. The healthcare providers present during birth will ensure that all these steps are taken to ensure the babys health and safety.

‘Warm chain’: At delivery At delivery: Ensure the delivery room is warm (25° C), with no draughts. Dry the baby immediately; remove wet cloth Wrap the baby with clean dry cloth Keep the baby skin-to-skin with mother NC- 10 Teaching Aids: ENC
Slide 11-

Assess baby’s breathing at the time of drying: If the baby is crying vigorously or breathing adequately, then no intervention is needed if the baby is not breathing or gasping, then skilled care in the form of positive pressure ventilation etc. (i.e. RESUSCITATION) would be required Helping the baby breathe NC- 11 Teaching Aids: ENC
Slide 12-

Keep the baby clothed and wrapped; cover the head Postpone bathing particularly for small babies Keep baby close to the mother Use kangaroo care for stable LBW babies Show mother how to avoid hypothermia and to recognize Initiate breastfeeding NC- 12 Teaching Aids: ENC ‘Warm chain’: After delivery

Slide 22-

Do not leave the mother and baby alone in the first hour after birth Monitor three parameters every 15 minutes: Breathing: Grunting, chest in-drawing, fast breathing (>60/min) Warmth: Check if the baby’s feet are cold (by using your hands) Color: Evaluate the color of trunk and extremities Monitoring the baby NC- 22 Teaching Aids: ENC
Slide 23-

Special situations Mother has HIV/AIDS Follow universal precautions as with any other delivery Baby can have immediate skin-to-skin contact as any other mother and baby Breastfeeding can begin when the baby is ready* If mother chooses replacement feeding, prepare formula for the first few feeds All other care (including cord care and eye care) remain the same NC- 23 Teaching Aids: ENC
