Cardiac catheterization is a medical procedure used to diagnose and treat various heart conditions. During this procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel in your arm, groin or neck and threaded through to your heart.

Once the catheter is in place, a contrast dye is injected, and X-ray images are taken to evaluate the blood flow through the heart and blood vessels. This can help identify problems such as blockages or narrowing of the arteries, heart valve problems, or abnormalities in the hearts structure or function.

Cardiac catheterization can also be used to perform certain heart procedures such as angioplasty and stenting to open blocked or narrowed arteries, or to place devices such as pacemakers or implantable defibrillators.
