Learning Objectives Describe the importance of high quality CPR and its impact on survival Describe and Apply all of the steps of the Chain of survival Recognize the signs of someone needing CPR Perform high-quality CPR for and adult Learning how to communicate and work with a team to save a life Part I: adult Chain of Survival (covered last unit) Part II: Scene Safety and practice Part III: Adult Compressions and practice Part IV: pocket mas Part V: 1-rescuer Adult BLS Part VI: AED Part VII: 2-rescuer Adult BLS

Body Systems in the unit: We will be learning how to pump blood and oxygen through the body for our victim. We will need to know some structures (anatomy) of: Cardiovascular system Circulatory System
Slide 4-

Circulatory Anatomy 3 different types of blood vessels Artery: takes blood away from the heart Vein: brings blood back to the heart Capillaries: smallest form of blood vessel were gases (oxygen/CO2) is exchanged
Slide 5-

Circulatory coloring Using your guided notes color the circulatory system Change colors when you meet an “X” The “x” represents the capillaries where blood looses it’s oxygen (gas exchange)
Slide 6-

Circulatory coloring Cardiac Circulation: Blood flow within the heart Pulmonary circulation: Blood flow from heart to lungs and back to heart Systemic Circulation: Blood flow to the entire body

Overview During the next few slides you will learn to perform high-quality CPR skills, both as a single rescuer and as a member of a multi-rescuer Use adult BLS skills for victims who are adolescents (after the onset of puberty) and older Which CPR skills you use depends on your training: Hand-Only CPR: a single rescuer with little training and limited equipment 30:2 CPR: a lifeguard who rescues a drowning child or adult in cardiac arrest Teamwork: EMS who are called to a scene to care for cardiac arrest victim will perform multi-rescuer coordinated CPR

Slide 14-

Please read pages 15-19 in your Student Workbook (stop at chest compressions)
Slide 15-

The first rescuer who arrives at the side of a cardiac arrest victim should quickly perform boxes 1 &2
Slide 16-

Video segment: Scene safety and Assessment Practice with video
Slide 17-

Box 3: next assess the victim for normal breathing and pulse Assess breathing at the same time as you check the pulse This should take no more than 10 seconds
Slide 18-

Please read pgs 19-20 compressions Guiding Questions: Explain High-quality chest compressions Explain what you read in the following sections:
Slide 19-

Video segment: Compressions Practice with video Pocket mask Practice with video 1-rescuer Adult BLS Practice with video Guiding questions after video: What is chest recoil? Purpose? What maneuvers could you use to open the Airway Name 2 things to avoid with head tilt-chin lift

Overview: An automated external defibrillator (AED) is alight weight, portable, computerized device that can identify an abnormal heart rhythm that needs a shock. Early Defibrillation is key Having a Public-access defibrillation (PAD) is important Research has shown that if rescuers minimize the interval between the last compression and shock delivery, the shock is much more likely to be effective Minimizing this time will require practice and excellent team coordination
Slide 24-

Defibrillation: An AED analyzes the heart rhythm to identify the presence of a rhythm that responds to shock therapy (a shockable rhythm) If a shockable rhythm is detected, it will prompt the delivery of an electrical shock to the heart It temporarily “stuns” the heart and stops the abnormal rhythm so a normal heart rhythm can return If circulation returns this is called return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC)
Slide 25-

Life-threatening Arrhythmias Arrhythmia is an irregular or abnormal heart beat They occur when the electrical impulses that cause the heart to beat happen too quickly, too slowly or erratically Can be life threatening 2 types of Arrhythmias Pulseless ventricular tachycardia (pVT) Lower chambers of heart contract really fast. IN some cases so fast that no pulse can be found. The body organs, heart, and brain don’t get blood or oxygen Ventricular fibrillation: (VF) is an arrest rhythm Heart activity becomes disordered, heart quivers really fast and unsynchronized so no blood is pumped

On your piece of paper write down 5 facts that you think you will need to know for the test They can be from the reading or Green action Squares. Paying attention to: Now, you have 10 min to gather other facts from your peers, if you already have it written down move on to the next person. Questions? READY GO!
