About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Blood transfusion Physiology” by Dr Sunita Mittal.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about blood transfusion, a medical procedure in which blood is transferred from one person (the donor) to another person (the recipient). This procedure is commonly used to treat various medical conditions, such as severe anemia, bleeding disorders, and cancer.

The blood transfusion process involves several physiological factors. Firstly, the blood group and Rh factor of both the donor and the recipient must be compatible to avoid any adverse reactions. If the blood groups are not compatible, the recipients immune system may recognize the donor blood cells as foreign and attack them, causing a transfusion reaction.

When the donor blood is transfused into the recipients bloodstream, the red blood cells (RBCs) in the donor blood can carry oxygen to the body tissues, which is essential for energy production. The RBCs also contain hemoglobin, a protein that helps transport oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and other organs.

The plasma in the donor blood contains various proteins, such as albumin, which help maintain fluid balance in the body. It also contains antibodies, which help fight off infections and diseases.

After a blood transfusion, the recipients body must process and eliminate any excess fluids and cells in the donor blood. This process is primarily carried out by the kidneys, which filter the blood and remove any excess fluid and waste products.

In some cases, the recipients body may produce antibodies against the donor blood cells after the transfusion, leading to a delayed transfusion reaction. This reaction can cause symptoms such as fever, jaundice, and anemia. To minimize the risk of a transfusion reaction, doctors carefully match the donor and recipient blood types and monitor the recipients vital signs during and after the transfusion.

▪Cross Matching is a procedure performed prior to a blood transfusion to detect incompatibilities between the donor and recipient. Cross Matching

Many times, blood transfusion might not be without hazards, so the risk should be weighed out against benefit. The dictum is - TO USE BLOOD PRODUCTS ONLY WHEN NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE IS LEFT Indication of blood transfusion

Transfusion of Blood Components Transfusion of ‘Blood Components’ is – When, specific portion or fraction of blood that is lacking in a patient is transfused. Advantages of blood component therapy Avoids the risk of sensitizing the patients to other blood components. Provides optimal therapeutic benefit while reducing risk of volume overload. Increases availability of needed blood products to larger population. Thus it is a safe and low risk procedure

Self Assessment Critical Thinking Questions Following a motor vehicle accident, a patient is rushed to the emergency department with multiple traumatic injuries, causing severe bleeding. The patient’s condition is critical, and there is no time for determining his blood type. What type of blood is transfused, and why? 2. In preparation for a scheduled surgery, a patient visits the hospital lab for a blood draw. The technician collects a blood sample and performs a test to determine its type. She places a sample of the patient’s blood in two wells. To the first well she adds anti-A antibody. To the second she adds anti-B antibody. Both samples visibly agglutinate. Has the technician made an error, or is this a normal response? If normal, what blood type does this indicate?

1. The process in which antibodies attach to antigens, causing the formation of masses of linked cells, is called- sensitization coagulation agglutination hemolysis 2. People with type O blood group - have both antigens A and B on their erythrocytes lack both antigens A and B on their erythrocytes have neither anti-A nor anti-B antibodies circulating in their blood plasma are considered universal recipients 3. Hemolytic disease of the newborn is a risk during a subsequent pregnancy in which: a type AB mother is carrying a type O fetus a type O mother is carrying a type AB fetus a Rh+ mother is carrying an Rh− fetus a Rh− mother is carrying a second Rh+ fetus Self Assessment
