“Without the Sun's heat and light, the Earth would be a lifeless ball of ice-coated rock”. (NASA, n.d.) The Sun: warms our seas stirs our atmosphere generates our weather patterns gives energy to grow green plants (which provide the food and oxygen for life on Earth) (NASA, n.d.) Sunlight is essential to life as we know it.

We’ve all heard that too much sun is bad for you. This is true but don’t be fooled, our bodies need sunlight as well as “moonlight” (darkness) for important body and mind functions.

Benefits of Sunlight Increases Vitamin D production Improves mood (increases serotonin—your ”feel good” hormone) Better quality of sleep (circadian rhythm- your wake/sleep cycle) Stronger bones (benefit of increased Vitamin D) Lowers blood pressure (nitric oxide is released when your skin is exposed to the sun which lowers blood pressure) **It only takes 5-15 minutes of sun exposure a few times a week to get these benefits.

Circadian Rhythms Your circadian rhythm is your 24-hour internal clock that is constantly ticking in the background of your brain. It goes from sleepiness and alertness at regular intervals. It's also known as your sleep/wake cycle. (National Sleep Foundation, 2020) Your circadian rhythm works best when you have regular sleep habits, like going to bed at night and waking up in the morning on a schedule (including weekends). You can disrupt your circadian rhythm by letting things get in the way, like staying up playing video games**, chatting with friends, or late-night cram sessions for exams. This makes you feel out of sorts and can make it harder to pay attention. **(Blue light emissions from your devices are a huge issue but we will save that for another lesson.) The Sun and the Moon: How do they affect our Moods?

Sunlight and “Moonlight”/darkness tell the brain to release certain hormones. Exposure to sunlight increases the brain’s release of a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin helps with boosting mood and can make a person feel calm and focused. At night, darkness or lack of light, triggers the brain to make another hormone called melatonin. This hormone is responsible for helping you sleep. Lack of sunlight can cause Serotonin levels can drop. Low levels of serotonin are linked to a higher risk of major depression with seasonal pattern (formerly known as seasonal affective disorder or SAD). This is form of depression is triggered by the changing seasons and lack of sunlight. (Nall, 2018)
