The auditory system is composed of three main parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.

The outer ear consists of the pinna (the visible part of the ear) and the ear canal. The pinna collects sound waves and directs them into the ear canal, which then leads to the eardrum.

The middle ear consists of the eardrum and three small bones called ossicles (the malleus, incus, and stapes). When sound waves reach the eardrum, they cause it to vibrate, which in turn causes the ossicles to vibrate. The ossicles amplify the sound waves and transmit them to the inner ear.

The inner ear consists of the cochlea and the vestibular system. The cochlea is a snail-shaped structure filled with fluid and tiny hair cells. When the ossicles transmit sound waves to the cochlea, the fluid inside the cochlea moves and stimulates the hair cells. The hair cells then send electrical signals to the brain, which the brain interprets as sound.

The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, is responsible for our sense of balance and spatial orientation. It consists of three semicircular canals and two otolith organs, which detect movement and gravity.

The auditory system also involves several neural pathways in the brainstem and the auditory cortex in the brain, which are responsible for processing and interpreting sound information.
