HYPERTENSION Hypertension (HTN or HT), also known as high blood pressure (HBP), is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. High blood pressure typically does not cause symptoms.

STAGES OF HYPERTENSION There are four stages of hypertension: Normal. Prehypertension(mild). Stage 1(moderate). Stage 2(severe).

NORMAL BLOOD PRESSURE Systolic less than 120 mm Hg and diastolic less than 80 mm Hg. Systolic is < 120 mm Hg. Diastolic is < 80 mm Hg.

PREHYPERTENSION Systolic between 120-129 mm Hg. Diastolic less than 80 mm Hg.

STAGE 1(MODERATE) Systolic between 130-139 mm Hg. Diastolic between 80-89 mm Hg.

STAGE 2(SEVERE) Systolic is greater than 140. Diastolic is greater than 90.

CAUSES OF HYPERTENSION A diet high in salt, fat, and/or cholesterol. Chronic conditions such as kidney and hormone problems, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Family history, especially if your parents or other close relatives have high blood pressure. Lack of physical activity.

SYMPTOMS OFSEVERE HYPERTENSION Headache. Shortness of breath. Nosebleeds. Dizziness. Chest pain. Visual changes. Blood in the urine

LIFE STYLE CHANGES TO TREAT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE Losing weight if you are overweight or obese Quitting smoking. Eating a healthy diet, including the DASH diet (eating more fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy products, less saturated and total fat) Reducing the amount of sodium in your diet to less than 1,500 milligrams a day if you have high blood pressure; healthy adults should try to limit their sodium intake to no more than 2,300 milligrams a day (about 1 teaspoon of salt). Limiting alcohol to two drinks a day for men, one drink a day for women

DRUGS TO TREAT HYPERTENSION There are several types of drugs used to treat high blood pressure including: Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) Diuretics Beta-blockers Calcium channel blockers Alpha-blockers Alpha-agonists Renin inhibitors.

ASTHMA Asthma is a chronic disease involving the airways in the lungs. These airways, or bronchial tubes, allow air to come in and out of the lungs. If you have asthma your airways are always inflamed. They become even more swollen and the muscles around the airways can tighten when something triggers your symptoms.

TYPES OF ASTHMA Child-Onset Asthma. Adult-Onset Asthma. Exercise-Induced Asthma. Cough-Induced Asthma. Occupational Asthma. Nocturnal Asthma. Steroid-Resistant Asthma (Severe Asthma).

CAUSES OF ASTHMA The cause of asthma is not known, but there is evidence that many factors play a part: Genetic factors. Environmental factors. Dietary changes. Lack of exercise. Occupational exposure

SYMPTOMS Shortness of breath. Chest tightness or pain. Wheezing when exhaling, which is a common sign of asthma in children. Trouble sleeping caused by shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing. Coughing or wheezing attacks that are worsened by a respiratory virus, such as a cold or the flu.

DIAGNOSIS OF ASTHMA Doctors seldom do lung tests in children under age 5. Instead, diagnosis is generally based on a child's signs and symptoms, medical history, and physical examination. It can be especially difficult to diagnose asthma in young children because there are many conditions that cause asthma-like symptoms in this age group.

TREATMENT OF ASTHMA Long-term control medications such as inhaled corticosteroids are the most important medications used to keep asthma under control. These preventive medications treat the airway inflammation that leads to asthma symptoms. Used on a daily basis, these medications can reduce or eliminate asthma flare-ups.
