About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Antimicrobial Stewardship & Antibiotic Resistance" by Roderick Go, DO, Dalia Eid, MD and Katherine De Jesus, PharmD.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about antimicrobial stewardship and antibiotic resistance.

Antimicrobial stewardship refers to a coordinated approach to promoting the appropriate use of antimicrobials (e.g., antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals) in order to optimize patient outcomes while minimizing the development of antibiotic resistance. The goal of antimicrobial stewardship is to ensure that patients receive the right antimicrobial at the right dose and for the right duration, in order to improve clinical outcomes, reduce the emergence of antibiotic-resistant infections, and decrease healthcare costs.

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to resist the effects of antibiotics, making it more difficult to treat bacterial infections. Antibiotic resistance can arise due to inappropriate use of antibiotics, including overuse, underuse, and misuse of these drugs. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics can promote the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can cause severe infections that are difficult to treat.

Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are designed to promote the appropriate use of antimicrobials, with the goal of minimizing the development of antibiotic resistance. These programs typically involve a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals who work together to optimize the use of antimicrobials in their facility. Strategies employed by ASPs can include antibiotic stewardship guidelines, education and training for healthcare providers, antibiotic cycling or de-escalation, and implementation of rapid diagnostic tests to guide antibiotic therapy.

Overall, antimicrobial stewardship is an important approach to combatting antibiotic resistance and improving patient outcomes. By promoting appropriate use of antibiotics and minimizing the development of antibiotic-resistant infections, ASPs can help to preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations.

6 About Antibiotic Resistance. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. https://www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/about.html. Published December 13, 2021. Accessed September 19, 2022. Antimicrobial Resistance Occurs when germs develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them, and they continue to grow Affects people at any stage of life, including healthcare, veterinary, and agriculture industries Antimicrobial resistance can result in the inability to treat infections and control public health threats The pace of development of new antimicrobials is not keeping up with antimicrobial resistance Any antibiotic use can lead to antibiotic resistance
