What is the Alexander Technique? Kay Cady MSTAT MEd (Exon) Teacher of the Alexander Technique
Slide 2-

What is the treatment? It is not a treatment! The Alexander Technique is about learning to look after your SELF How does the complementary therapy maintain the health and wellbeing of the individual (M3) You take responsibility for your own health and well being, by learning a different way of living your life!
Slide 3-

Why do people choose Alexander Technique? What would the orthodox treatment be and how do they differ? (P4) Whilst it is preventative, most people come following chronic pain Current treatment is often painkillers which just mask the problem
Slide 4-

What is the Alexander Technique? It is an Education…. (re-educating the neuromuscular system) It is not a Therapy or medical practice An Alexander teacher cannot “cure” you of your ills
Slide 5-

How often can you have the treatment? (P3) Having 20-30 lessons close together is most beneficial process, as it is kinaesthetic education and not a treatment (re-educating the neuromuscular system)
Slide 6-

What part of the body is being treated? Not a treatment, but Teachers work with the mind, body and spirit, the SELF. The Self is a Psychophysical unity and has been know to help with musculoskeletal, psychological, cardio-respiratory and metabolic symptoms (P4) What are the contraindications? (P3) If the teacher has any concerns, the pupil is referred to a doctor
Slide 7-

What is it used for? We have lost the good use that we had as a small child and have developed our own ways of doing things and this is not helpful to our wellbeing Learning the Alexander Technique allows us to rediscover this good use.
Slide 8-

How did we lose the ‘good use’ We have developed bad habits over our lives, that are harmful to our functioning Misusing our “SELF” leads to aches pains and debilitating illness
Slide 9-

Stand up and check out your physical habits of use..... Do you stand on one foot? Are your knees pushed back and stiff? Are your hips fixed? Are your shoulders pulled forward? Is your chin in the air? Are you breathing? Is there tension in any other part of your body? Do you look down when you are looking at your mobile?
Slide 10-

Emotional Habits of use Anxiety ( exam anxiety) Anger Sadness ( Bringing our baggage with us) Fear (of practising on clients) Frustration of not being confident enough

Slide 12-

The Subconscious We rely on our subconscious to direct our movement. ( 95% is subconscious) We stand, sit, walk, and bend automatically with no thought to how we move. Our subconscious habitually does it for us. It dominates us so that we don't consider the best way to go about our everyday activities.
Slide 13-

Meet Mr Peter Habit ! (My subconscious, personified) My misguided friend In the past, I have trained him... Badly... And now... He jumps in before I have the chance to think and does things for me -not helpful! /
Slide 14-

I need to retrain Peter.. He has been a part of me for a long time He should be my friend and help me through life He knows me better than anyone else... even better than my mother He has been with me every single moment of my life, enjoying my happiness, indulging in my sadness He knows my every move......and he is not going to go away But I must not treat him badly!
Slide 15-

How can I change Peter? We all have the ability to change Peter can change like the rest of us I need strength and discipline I just need to tell Peter to STOP interfering and give me time to rethink the best way to carry out my life But, be firm, not angry!
Slide 16-

What is the Alexander Technique? It involves recognising that the Body Mind and Spirit are a psychophysical unity There is not an emotion that does not manifest itself in the body
Slide 17-

Potted History Alexander lost his voice No medical practitioner could help him He spent 10 years of systematic self study, using mirrors His voice returned His health improved He wanted to share his discovery
Slide 18-

Restoring the balance Alexander has provided us with a series of directions that we use whilst undertaking any activity. This is a thought process and not a ‘doing’ You will learn these directions when you have Alexander lessons Thinking – NOT doing
Slide 19-

What are the benefits to the individual if they had the treatment? (P3) Improved Posture in Movement More space for vital organs to function Reduced tension Feeling of well being Increased self esteem and confidence Increased energy levels
Slide 20-

No exercises! You just need to direct your thoughts whilst doing any daily activities, such as sitting, walking, lying down, vacuuming, making tea, brushing your teeth! In leisure activities such as Running , walking or playing tennis Also at work using the computer, lifting heavy objects etc
Slide 21-

This is not what the Alexander Technique is about! Sit up straight Shoulders back and down Tuck Bum in! We must encourage our children to think rather than do…. or they are likely to be doing a different kind of “badly”
Slide 22-

Life is about Stimulus - Response Mostly we do things without thinking and it is then that we misuse our SELF. For example….. Stimulus – phone rings Response – rush to pick up phone We don’t look after our SELF
Slide 23-
