A TIME SERIES STUDY TO FINDOUT EFFECTIVENESS OF ACL RECONSTRUCTION REHABILITATION: “WITH BRACE OR WITHOUT BRACE”
Slide 2-

INTRODUCTION: ACL is one of the most commonly injured ligaments of the knee. Symptomatic ACL tear can be reconstructed by using different autologous grafts which can be- 1.Hamstring tendon 2. Quadriceps tendon 3. Patellar tendon 4.Tendoachilis
Slide 3-

Traditional rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction emphasizes on the use of knee brace early post-operative period. Functional knee brace Knee immobilizer
Slide 4-

Aim: To evaluate the functional outcome of the patients following arthroscopic ACL reconstruction without post-operative bracing.

MATERIAL & Methods: Time series analysis of 35 patients Single Surgeon FWB mobilization within 24 hours. October 2014 and December 2016 Inclusion criteria: Elective surgery Both gender Age limit(20-34 years) Desire to return to sports Exclusion criteria: Trauma Infection

Lysholm knee score and residual quadriceps wastage were measured clinically at- 3 months 6 months 12 months Lysholm score: Quadriceps wastage: Functional knee outcome score Eight questionnaires-Pain,Instability,Swelling,Locking,Limp,Stair climbing,Squatting & Need for support.

Discussion: Hospital stay averaged 2.5 days. No instabilities were noted at follow up examinations and no failure recorded. We noted in our series, the average Lysholm Knee Score at six months was comparable to that of other published series. However, our Lysholm scores averaged higher when compared to those of published series of braced patients at three months.
Slide 11-

Conclusion: ACL rehabilitation without brace gives eventually better outcome and promotes faster recovery due to the ability to work on the quadriceps at an earlier stage. This needs to be combined with a sound surgical technique.
