What is Virus? A microorganism Smaller than a bacterium Can not grow or reproduce apart from a living cell
Slide 4-

General Characteristics
Slide 5-

1) Viruses are submicroscopic infectious particles. 1000x smaller than eukaryotic cells Size of a virus particle reported in micrometers (10-6 m) OR nanometers (10-9 m)
Slide 6-

2) Non living structures 3) Non-cellular 4) Contain a protein coat called the capsid 5) Have a nucleic acid core containing DNA or RNA (one or the other - not both) 6) Capable of reproducing only when inside a HOST cell
Slide 7-

6) Some viruses are enclosed in an protective envelope 7) Some viruses may have spikes to help attach to the host cell 8) Most viruses infect only SPECIFIC host cells 9) Outside of host cells, viruses are inactive CAPSID ENVELOPE DNA SPIKES
Slide 8-

Structure Of Virus Enveloped viruses Have envelope outside the capsid and covering it to give secondary protection. Non-enveloped viruses Have no envelop Capsid act as primary protection

Types of virus Based on the nucleic acid they are two types: 1) DNA virus 2) RNA virus
Slide 11-

Types of virus (cont.) DNA virus: Double strand DNA virus: Adenoviruses Herpes viruses Poxviruses. Single strand DNA virus: Parvoviruses Coliphages.
Slide 12-

Types of virus (cont.) RNA virus: Double strand RNA virus: Rotavirus Single strand DNA virus: Retrovirus
Slide 13-

Types of virus (cont.) Based on the Shape there are 3 types viruses Helical Shaped
Slide 14-

Types of virus (cont.) Polyhedral Shaped
Slide 15-

Types of virus (cont.) Complex Shaped

Some important terms Virion: It is the complete and infective form of a virus with a core of RNA and capsid. Nucleocapsid: It is the capsid of a virus with the enclosed nucleic acid. Viroid: It is the smallest infectious pathogens contain only single strand RNA without protein code.
Slide 19-

Life Cycle Of Virus Lysogenic Cycle Integration of the bacteriophage nucleic acid formations of a circular replicon Example Mono or chickenpox Lytic Cylce Results in the destruction of the infected cell and its membrane. Example flu virus

Slide 26-

Vaccination Administration of antigenic material (a vaccine). To stimulate an individual's immune system. To develop adaptive immunity to a pathogen. Vaccines can prevent or ameliorate infectious disease.
Slide 27-

Vaccine Vaccine is a weaken form of the virus used to expose our immune system to the virus which will allow our body to better fight off the virus when exposed to the full blow virus.
Slide 28-

Anti-viral Drugs Can be classified into 3 groups based on target. Reverse transcriptase inhibitor Zidovudin Dedanosin Protease inhibitor Darunavir Saquinavir Antisense therapy Fomivirsen
Slide 29-

Virus Transmission Breathing in air-borne droplets contaminated with a virus Eating food or drinking water contaminated with a virus Having sexual contact with a person who is infected with a sexually transmitted virus Indirect transmission from person to person by a virus host, such as a mosquito, tick, or field mouse Touching surfaces or body fluids contaminated with a virus
