UTI Causes: -caused by pathogens of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as by certain fungi, but most commonly by: Escherichia coli Klebsiella pneumoniae Proteus mirabilis Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus saprophyticu

2 types 1.) Uncomplicated UTIs -affect individuals who are healthy and have no structural/ neurological urinary tract abnormalities > lower UTIs (cystitis) > upper UTIs (pyelonephritis) Risk factors : female gender, a prior UTI, sexual activity, vaginal infection, diabetes, obesity and genetic susceptibility

Complicated UTIs -assoc. with factors that compromise the urinary tract or host defense, including: *urinary obstruction *urinary retention caused by neurological disease *immunosuppression *renal failure *renal transplantation *pregnancy and *presence of foreign bodies such as calculi, indwelling catheters or other drainage devices

Signs & Symptoms Abdominal pain feeling tired and weak burning sensation when urinating passing frequent small amounts of urine frequent urge to urinate feel a sharp, burning pain (dysuria) when you urinate sudden changes in urine’s appearance (cloudy, sometimes tinged with blood) and odor (unusual strong smell) pelvic pain in women
