SPECIES P. VIVAX P. FALCIPARUM P. MALARIE P. OVALE
Slide 3-

P. Vivax Most widespread which risks 2.5 billion people worldwide (82% of plasmodium infections). P. Falciparum Most dangerous. Most of the malaria deaths are caused by falciparum. P. Malariae First malaria species to discovered. P. Ovale Rarest of these four. Infection is similar to Vivax

Early Trophozoite Vivax Aka Ring Form Large- 2.5 µm. Usually single. Falciparum Small- 2.5 µm. Multiple rings common. Ovale Malariae Similar to Vivax, but thicker. Similar to Vivax, but compact.
Slide 11-

Late Trophozoite Vivax Irregular, amoeboid. Vacuole is prominent. Falciparum Complex, rarely amoeboid. Pigments get collected into single mass. Ovale Malariae Band shaped. Compact with coarse pigments.

Erythrocytic Schizont Vivax Large, fills the entire RBC. Merozoites 12-24 Grape like cluster Falciparum Small compact. Fills almost 2/3rd of RBC. Merozoites 8-24 Grape like cluster Ovale Malariae Medium sized. Merozoites 6-12 Daisy head/ Rosette pattern Fills about 3/4th of RBC. Merozoites 6-12 Irregularly arranged

Good morning everyone, I am here to speak on the classification of malaria. First we begin with the taxonomic classification of the organism plasmodium. It is a protozoan protist, which belongs to subphylum apicomplexa, class sporozoa, subclass coccidia, order haemosporida, family plasmodiadae and genus plasmodium. This genus consists of several species of which the four most important ones are plasmodium vivax, plasmodium falciparum, plasmodium malariae and plasmodium ovale. Anotther one which is coming to our notice recently is plamodium knowlesi. But here we’ll study the former four. We begin with Vivax-it is the most widely spread one covering the major part of south east asia and whole of latin america. Falciparum-it is the one causing the most dangerous infection which may often be lethal and thus is responsible for almost all deaths caused by malaria. It is distibuted globally but is prominent in sub-saharan africa. Malariae-it is the earliest one to be found. It was dicovered by charles laveran , a french army surgeon in year 1880. Ovale-it is the rarest one and resembles to vivax in morphology and clinical features. Now coming to specific differences between the four. We’ll follow the order of life cycle. So to begin with, the infective stage for humans is sporozoite. It enters circulation by mosquito bite and migrates to liver cells where it forms either hypnozoites or exo-erythrocytic schizont Hypnozoites are the dormant stage which is responsible for recurrence of infection afterwards. Exo-erythrocytic schizonts are formed by division within liver cells. Multiple merozoites are formed. This occurs until their number becomes sufficient to attack the host RBCs. The time from infection until this point is called Latent period. Latent period in Vivax is…… Now the schizont ruptures, the merozoites are released into circulation which enter RBCs The RBC preference of vivax is….
