In phonetics, stress is the degree of emphasis given a sound or syllable in speech, also called lexical stress or word stress. Unlike some other languages, English has variable (or flexible) stress. What is Stress?

primary stress: the loudest syllable in the word. In one-syllable words, that one syllable has the primary stress). Primary stress is marked in IPA by putting a raised vertical line [ˈ] at the beginning of the syllable. secondary stress: syllables which aren't completely unstressed, but aren't as loud as the primary stress. Secondary stress is marked with a lowered vertical line [ˌ] at the beginning of the syllable. unstressed syllables: syllables that have no stress at all. A good example of the difference between secondary stress and the complete absence of stress is the final syllable of delegate, used as a verb and used as a noun. [ˈdɛləˌɡet] verb: You have to delegate your responsibilities [ˈdɛləɡət] noun: We elected a delegate to the national committee.

When a noun and verb are spelled the same but sound different, remembering how to say them can be very confusing. In most cases, there is a simple rule to help you. If the word is a noun, stress the first syllable. If the word is a verb, stress the second. Ex: polish: The POLish woman will polISH her shoes. conflict: The CONflict conFLICTS with the UN’s charter.

Word stress is not used in all languages. Some languages, Japanese or French for example, pronounce each syllable with equal emphasis. Word stress is not an optional extra that you can add to the English language if you want. It is part of the language! Fluent English speakers use word stress to communicate rapidly and accurately, even in difficult conditions. If, for example, you do not hear a word clearly, you can still understand the word because of the position of the stress. Why word stress was important?
