About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Strength” by Dr.Pradeep Kumar Dubey.

This medical PowerPoint presentation talks about strength which refers to the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to exert force against a resistance. It is an important physical attribute that has numerous benefits, including improved physical performance, better posture, and reduced risk of injury.

Strength training, also known as resistance training, is a type of exercise that is specifically designed to improve strength. It typically involves lifting weights, using resistance bands, or using bodyweight exercises to challenge the muscles and increase their strength over time.

Strength training has numerous benefits beyond just improving strength. It can also improve bone density, reduce the risk of injury, improve balance and stability, increase muscle mass, and improve overall physical function.

Its important to note that strength training is not just for bodybuilders or athletes. Anyone can benefit from strength training, regardless of their age or fitness level. In fact, its especially important for older adults to engage in regular strength training to maintain their physical function and independence as they age.

Slide 2-

STRENGTH Strength is the ability to overcome resistance or to act against resistance. It is conditional ability It depends on energy liberation process Most important ability Depends on contractions of muscles Strength can be termed as per the nature of movements performed
Slide 3-

Types of Strength 1. General Strength 2. Specific Strength
Slide 4-

Maximum Strength: It is the ability to overcome resistance or to act against maximal resistance. It is measured by finding out the maximum resistance which can be overcome or the maximum force which can be applied by the muscles. The maximum strength is a motor ability and involves force application during a voluntary movement. The muscles normally are capable of generating higher magnitudes of force if stimulated electrically. The electrical stimulation causes maximal contraction of all motor units in a muscle which normally cannot be achieved voluntarily except under extreme emotional state of fear, anger etc.
Slide 5-

Explosive Strength: It is a combination of strength and speed abilities. It can be defined as the ability to overcome resistance with high speed. Depending on the nature of combination of strength and speed the explosive, strength can be further sub-divided into start strength, strength speed (power) and speed strength.
Slide 6-

Strength Endurance: Like explosive strength it is also a product of two motor abilities. It is the ability to overcome resistance or to act against resistance under conditions of fatigue. Strength endurance can be a form of static or dynamic strength depending on the fact whether the movement is static (isometric) or dynamic (isotonic). Depending on the nature of the combination of strength and endurance the strength endurance can be further classified into proper strength endurance and endurance strength. Strength endurance is the ability to overcome high resistance or to act against high resistance under conditions of fatigue e.g., in combat sports, long duration events requiring strength e.g., Pole Vault. Endurance strength is needed for activities in which low resistances are to be tackled e.g., Swimming, Road Cycling etc. Even for sprints some amount of strength endurance is required in the last phase or in heats. Strength endurance, therefore, is important in most of the sports.
Slide 7-

Static Strength: It is the ability to act against resistance. It is also called isometric strength. Dynamic Strength: It is the ability to overcome resistance. It is also known by the name of isotonic strength. Relative Strength: It is not strength ability. It is simply a ratio which we get by dividing maximum strength with body weight. General Strength: It is also not a separate ability. It is understood to be a complex product of all strength abilities needed general strength. Special Strength: It is the ability to tackle resistance in a particular sport. It is not strength ability in itself. It can be any strength ability required for a specific sport.
Slide 8-

Factors Determining Strength Muscle Cross Section: The muscle cross section indicates the size of the muscle. It is an accepted fact that bigger and larger muscles can generate more force. This is nearly the same in males and females. Muscle Fiber Spectrum: The muscles consist of muscle fibers which are basically of two types: fast twitch fibers (white fibers) and slow twitch fibers (red fibers). The fast twitch fibers can contract faster and can produce more force.
Slide 9-

Co-ordination: The level of strength is markedly affected by co-ordination. The role of co-ordination in strength performance can be discussed from the three levels of co-ordination involved in tackling or overcoming a resistance. Skill: The process of overcoming or acting against resistance involves some type of movement involving muscles of more than one body part. The best results are achieved if this movement is done skillfully. Inter muscular co-ordination: The inter muscular co-ordination refers to the proper temporal and dynamic co-ordination between different muscles and muscle groups (muscle synergy) which are contracting to overcome or tackle a resistance. Intra-muscular co-ordination: The intra muscular co-ordination refers to the co-ordination among different motor units within a muscle.
Slide 10-

Energy Supply: The ultimate source for muscle contraction is the rate and amount of energy supply through chemical reactions taking place in the muscles. Body Weight: It is generally known that heavier persons are stronger than lighter persons. This is particularly true in case of trained sportsmen. Psychic Factors: Certain psychic factors like motivation, arousal, emotions of anger, aggression etc., and have a marked affect on strength performance. It has been proved that psychic factors limit the individual’s capacity to fully utilize his strength capacity or potential. Physique and constitution. The length of the muscle at the time of contraction. Strength and Stability of the musculo-skeletal system. Bio-mechanical factors like leverage and angle of pull.

Preventive Measures in Strength Training Proper Warm-up: Correct Technique: Sequence of Exercises: Loading Procedure: Recovery Pauses: Breathing: One Sided Training: Fatigue: Safety Equipment:
Slide 12-

Strength Training for Children: The weight training for children should have low volume till 16 years of age. Partner exercises, exercises with one’s own body weight, medicine ball exercises etc., should form the major portion of exercises for strength training. Exercises should be done with lower intensity. It should not exceed 50-60% of the maximum. Exercises involving lifting of weight over head or resulting in high stress on vertebral column should be avoided. Children should be taught the correct techniques and breathing. This should be achieved by exercising with lower weights. Isometric exercise should be avoided. Strength training should be highly general in nature and should allow for rich variation of exercises, methods etc.
