About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Sickle Cell Genetics”.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about sickle cell disease, an inherited blood disorder caused by a mutation in the HBB gene, which provides instructions for making a protein called hemoglobin that carries oxygen in the blood. The mutation causes the hemoglobin molecules to form abnormal shapes, leading to the characteristic sickle-shaped red blood cells.

Sickle cell disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, which means that a person must inherit two copies of the mutated HBB gene (one from each parent) to develop the condition. If a person inherits only one copy of the mutated gene, they are said to have sickle cell trait, which is usually asymptomatic.

The HBB gene is located on chromosome 11, and there are several different versions, or alleles, of the gene. The most common allele that causes sickle cell disease is called HBB*S, which results from a specific mutation in the HBB gene. There are also other less common mutations that can lead to sickle cell disease.

Because sickle cell disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, it is more common in certain populations where the HBB*S allele is more prevalent, such as people of African descent, people from parts of the Middle East, and people of Hispanic descent. However, sickle cell disease can occur in anyone, regardless of their ethnicity.

The Robinson Family: Jaqueline: Mom – 32 years old Cory: Dad – 32 years old Samuel: Son – 4 years old Marie: Daughter – 2 months Marie’s routine infant screening was inconclusive. The entire family has been referred for genetic testing and counseling. Today’s lab

We will test this family using gel electrophoresis Gel electrophoresis separates molecules based on 2 basic factors, size and charge-to-mass ratio. For DNA, because all DNA has the same charge to mass ratio, only size matters. © 2019 by Amplyus LLC

Sickle cell is by far most common in people who are from, or who’s ancestors are from, central West Africa. Therefore, the single largest risk factor is family history and by extension, ancestry. Sickle cell risk factors From: Sickle Cell Disease in Africa, Grosse et al. 2011

Questions Why do sickle cell patients only have occasional crises? Why don’t they happen all the time? Other hemoglobinopathies? Is this the same as the test normally done by doctors and clinics?
