THE TREE Botanical Name: Santalum album Family name: Santalaceae Native to tropical asia Brown/grey trunk, smooth branches, smooth branches, twin leathery leaves and small pink/purple flowers. The tree must be older than 30 before it can be used in production of Sandalwood Oil Soft, sweet, woody, exotic scent , long lasting

History of Sandalwood It is widely used throughout Indian history, as both the tree and the oil, one of the herbs and spices mentioned in the poem Ramayana, around 2000BC Used by many cultures throughout history, the earliest mention as a medicinal herb in Tibetan and Chinese medicine By 700BC it was found in Egyptian embalming formulas Declared a Royal Tree by the Sultan of Mysore (India) in 1972 True Sandalwood is now on the IUCN Red List, categorized as Vulnerable The Indian Government now owns all Sandalwood trees to protect them. The oil is still widely used in religious rituals – Buddhism, Muslim, Pagan & Hindu
