Pharmacogenetics is the study of how variations in an individuals genes can affect their response to drugs. By examining an individuals genetic makeup, researchers can identify genetic variations that may affect how a drug is metabolized, absorbed, or eliminated from the body. This information can be used to tailor drug therapy to an individuals unique genetic profile, optimizing drug efficacy and minimizing side effects.

Pharmacogenomics, on the other hand, is a broader field that involves the study of how an individuals entire genome (i.e., all of their genes) can affect their response to drugs. This involves the use of high-throughput genomic technologies to identify genetic variations that may be associated with drug response, as well as the development of computational methods to analyze and interpret large amounts of genomic data.

Both pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics have the potential to improve the safety and efficacy of drug therapy by enabling personalized medicine. However, these fields are still in the early stages of development, and more research is needed to fully understand the complex interactions between genetics and drug response.

Pharmacogenetic versus Pharmacogenomic No universally accepted definitions of either Often used interchangeably Pharmacogenetics used for more than 40 years to denote the science about how heritability affects the response to drugs. Pharmacogenomics is new science about how the systematic identification of all the human genes, their products, interindividual variation, intraindividual variation in expression and function over time affects drug response/metabolism etc. The term pharmacogenomics was coined in connection with the human genome project Most use pharmacogenetics to depict the study of single genes and their effects on interindividual differences in (mainly) drug metabolising enzymes, and pharmacogenomics to depict the study of not just single genes but the functions and interactions of all genes in the genome in the overall variability of drugs response
