Repeated isolation of the same organism from cultures drawn through the catheter indicates a need for therapy Individual positive cultures and sporadic positive cultures are difficult to interpret in the absence of clinical or laboratory correlates Quantitative cultures may prove particularly helpful in establishing a diagnosis in this setting
