About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Orthopedic Treatment of Metastatic Bone Disease” by Kristy Weber and Scott Kominsky.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about metastatic bone disease, a condition where cancer cells from primary tumors spread to the bones. This condition can cause bone pain, fractures, spinal cord compression, and other complications. The orthopedic treatment of metastatic bone disease focuses on relieving pain, preventing fractures, and preserving mobility.

The treatment options for metastatic bone disease vary depending on the location and extent of the disease. The orthopedic treatments include surgery, radiation therapy, and systemic therapy.

Surgery: Surgery may be performed to stabilize a bone that is at risk of fracture or has already fractured due to metastatic bone disease. This can involve placing metal plates, screws, or rods to support the bone. In some cases, surgery may be done to remove the affected bone and replace it with an implant or graft.

Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy can be used to destroy cancer cells in the bone, reduce pain, and prevent fractures. External beam radiation therapy is the most common type of radiation therapy used for metastatic bone disease. It uses high-energy beams of radiation to target the affected area.

Systemic therapy: Systemic therapy is the use of drugs to treat the cancer throughout the body. Chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy may be used to shrink or slow the growth of the cancer cells in the bone.

In addition to these treatments, patients with metastatic bone disease may also receive supportive care, such as pain management, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. The goal of orthopedic treatment for metastatic bone disease is to improve the patients quality of life and relieve pain and discomfort associated with the condition.
