This medical PowerPoint presentation is about Narcotic withdrawal syndrome, also known as neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Neonatal abstinence syndrome is a condition that occurs in newborns who have been exposed to addictive substances, such as opioids, during pregnancy.

When a pregnant woman uses opioids or other addictive substances, these drugs can cross the placenta and enter the babys bloodstream. The baby becomes dependent on the drug and experiences withdrawal symptoms after birth when the drug is no longer available.

Symptoms of NAS can include irritability, high-pitched crying, tremors, seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, fever, and poor feeding. These symptoms can vary in severity depending on the type of drug used, the amount used, and the length of time the baby was exposed to the drug in utero.

Treatment for NAS may include medication to ease withdrawal symptoms, such as methadone or morphine, and supportive care, such as providing a quiet and dark environment, swaddling the baby, and offering small, frequent feedings.

It is important for pregnant women who are using opioids or other addictive substances to seek medical help to manage their addiction and reduce the risk of NAS in their babies.

Monitor level 24-48 hours after initiation of therapy. Clonidine: non-narcotic that targets the α2 adrenergic hyperactivity; at low doses, stimulates presynaptic adrenergic receptors, thereby increasing the amount of norepinephrine released into the synapse and lowering firing rate of adrenergic neurons. 0.5 to 1.0 μg/kg initial single dose and maintenance of 3 – 5 μg/kg/day divided every 4 to 6 hours
