THE CONSISTENCY MODEL: ACTIVATION VERSION
Slide 2-

Fiske and Maddi’s Position Donald W. Fiske 2

Theory 3 Fiske and Maddi are classed as consistency theorists because they consider the overall directionality of living to be the search for a match between actual and customary levels of activation The cognitive dissonance version of consistency theory emphasizes the discrepancy or match between two cognitive elements, usually an expectation or belief on the one hand and a perception of some event on the other.
Slide 4-

4 Fiske and Maddi’s Core A) In the activation theory offered by Fiske and Maddi , discrepancy is also the major determinant of behavior. C) A discrepancy or gap between the customary and actual levels of activation always produces behavior that aims to reduce it.
Slide 5-

The Core Tendency which is that persons will attempt to maintain the level of activation to which they are accustomed (i. e., that is characteristic of them) In clarifying why people show the core tendency, Fiske and Maddi (1961) assume that the coincidence of actual and customary levels of activation is experienced as a state of well-being, whereas discrepancies between them lead to negative affect--the greater the discrepancy, the greater the affect.

It is clear that on the psychological side,Fiske and Maddi are concerned with a general quality of organismic excitation similar to what many other theorists refer to as tension. 7 Stimulation

9 the customary level of activation refers to what feels normal or usual on the basis of accumulated past experience. These customary levels of activation can be roughly measured by averaging the actual activation curves for a person over many days. Such measurement was performed by Kleitman (1939), who found a regularity called the cycle of existence, with a single major rise and fall during the waking period. The customary level of activation
Slide 10-

MATECH MISMATECH Once one has postulated an actual and a customary level of activation, it is almost natural to consider the match or mismatch between them to be important. And this is just what Fiske and Maddi do. اگر فعال سازی واقعی از سطح عادی منحرف شود ، رفتار اصلاح کننده مؤثر ایجاد می شود. impact-decreasing behavior occurs the actual activation level is above that which is customary impact-increasing behavior results the actual activation level is below that which is customary Deviates 10

12 Fiske and Maddi do not consider the customary curve of activation to be present at birth; rather, it is probably formed out of experience. Fiske و Maddiمنحنی معمولی فعال سازی را در بدو تولددر نظر نمی گیرند بلکه احتمالاً از تجربه شکل گرفته است. they suggest the possibility that genetic considerations, presently not well understood, may predispose the person to a customary curve of activation having a particular shape and height. But the accumulated experience of particular levels of activation at specific times of the day is considered the major formative influence on this curve. Thus, the first important influence of the environment on the person is as the major determinant of the characteristic curve of activation. If you are forever intensifying your search for new and more meaningful and intense experiences, you increase the likelihood of precipitating a crisis in which your ability to keep what happens to you within manageable limits will be threatened. You might unwittingly precipitate a state of impact so great that it brings about an uncomfortably high level of activation. If this were to happen, according to the theory you would scramble to correct the high level of activation. 15

Periphery of Personality Maddi and his students have developed a view of the periphery of personality, including an emphasis on both peripheral characteristics and their organization into personality type. The shape of the characteristic curve of activation The average height of a person’s characteristic curve of activation The anticipatory and correctional techniques used for maintaining actual activation at the characteristic levels مدی و پروپست (1971) تفاوت هایی میان افراد در ارتباط باImpact مشخص کردند: یک فرد ممکن است به نفع یکی از سه ویژگی تحریک یعنی (شدت یا معناداری یا تنوع) باشد: High-activation people: انگیزه ی نزدیکی به شدت یا معناداری یا تنوع Low-activation people: انگیزه اجتناب از شدت یا معناداری یا تنوع

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE TRAIT Only when people begin to manipulate stimulation, be it external or internal, by pursuing or avoiding intensity, meaningfulness, or variety, do they show the goal-directedness of motivation
Slide 18-

18 HIGH-ACTIVATION TYPES WITH THE ACTIVE TRAIT HIGH-ACTIVATION PERSONS WITH ACTIVE AND EXTERNAL TRAITS
Slide 19-

19 IF THEY ALSO HAVE A HIGH NEED FOR MEANINGFULNESS: BUT IF THEY HAVE A HIGH NEED FOR INTESITY: AND IF THEY HAVE A HIGH NEED FOR VARIETY:
Slide 20-

HIGH-ACTIVATION PERSONS WITH ACTIVE AND INTERNAL TRAITS
Slide 21-

IF THEY HAVE A HIGH NEED FOR MEANINGFULNESS: IF INSTEAD THEY HAVE A HIGH NEED FOR INTENSITY: SHOULD THEY HAVE A HIGH NEED FOR VARIETY:
Slide 22-

LOW-ACTIVATION TYPES WITH THE ACTIVE TRAIT IF THEY HAVE A HIGH FEAR OF MEANINGFULNESS: IF THEY HAVE A HIGH FEAR OF INTENSITY: IF THEY HAVE A HIGH FEAR OF VARIETY
Slide 23-

LOW-ACTIVATION PERSONS WITH THE ACTIVE AND INTERNAL TRAITS IF THEY HAVE A HIGH FEAR OF MEANINGFULNESS: IF THEY HAVE A HIGH FEAR OF INTENSITY: IF THEY HAVE A HIGH FEAR OF VARIETY 5/20/2020 Designed by PoweredTemplate.com 23
Slide 24-

NOTES OF IDEAL AND NON IDEAL TYPES: They’re no different in their ability to fulfill their view of the good life than the low activation types! 5/20/2020 Designed by PoweredTemplate.com 24 High and low activation types do not mark the difference between ideal and non ideal forms of living, which correspond more closely with the distinction between active and passive traits.
Slide 25-

Types with the PASSIVE trait HIGH-ACTIVATION PERSONS WITH EXTERNAL AND PASSIVE TRAITS Depending on whether they also have a high need for meaningfulness, intensity, or variety, the distortional corrections will take the form of artificially augmenting the meaning, intensity, or variety of what happening in the environment 5/20/2020 25
Slide 26-

HIGH-ACTIVATION PERSONS WITH INTERNAL AND PASSIVE TRAITS They faced with the emergency task of correcting for actual activation levels that have fallen too low
Slide 27-

LOW-ACTIVATION PERSONS WITH EXTERNAL AND PASSIVE TRAITS The quality of the withdrawal from the world will be influenced by whether it is Meaningfulness, Intensity or Variety that they especially fear. 5/20/2020 Designed by PoweredTemplate.com 27
Slide 28-

LOW-ACTIVATION PERSONS WITH INTERNAL AND PASSIVE TRAITS They will not be especially effective in anticipating the imminent possibility of excessive impact Impact 5/20/2020 28 The particular defenses employed can be at least partially understood on the basis of whether the fear of MEANINGFULNESS, INTENSITY, OR VARIETY is especially strong in them.
