Fiske and Maddi’s Position Donald W. Fiske دونالد دبلیو فیسکه در سال 1916 در ماساچوست به دنیا آمد. وی پس از تحصیل در دانشگاه هاروارد ، دکترای خود را در رشته روانشناسی از دانشگاه میشیگان در سال 1948 دریافت کرد. در هاروارد و دفتر ارتباطات استراتژیک در طول جنگ جهانی دوم ، وی تحت تأثیر موری ، آلپورت و وایت قرار گرفت . زمانیکه درگیر فعالیت های تدریس و تحقیق در دانشگاه بود ،مهمترین علایق وی اندازه گیری متغیرهای شخصیت و درک شرایطی که رفتار انسان تحت آن تغییر می کند بود. Salvatore R. Theory 3 Fiske and Maddi are classed as consistency theorists because they consider the overall directionality of living to be the search for a match between actual and customary levels of activation The cognitive dissonance version of consistency theory emphasizes the discrepancy or match between two cognitive elements, usually an expectation or belief on the one hand and a perception of some event on the other.

4 Fiske and Maddi’s Core A) In the activation theory offered by Fiske and Maddi , discrepancy is also the major determinant of behavior. 9 the customary level of activation refers to what feels normal or usual on the basis of accumulated past experience. These customary levels of activation can be roughly measured by averaging the actual activation curves for a person over many days. Such measurement was performed by Kleitman (1939), who found a regularity called the cycle of existence, with a single major rise and fall during the waking period. The customary level of activation

MATECH MISMATECH Once one has postulated an actual and a customary level of activation, it is almost natural to consider the match or mismatch between them to be important. 12 Fiske and Maddi do not consider the customary curve of activation to be present at birth; rather, it is probably formed out of experience. If you are forever intensifying your search for new and more meaningful and intense experiences, you increase the likelihood of precipitating a crisis in which your ability to keep what happens to you within manageable limits will be threatened. You might unwittingly precipitate a state of impact so great that it brings about an uncomfortably high level of activation.
