Large intestine Dr. Amal Elnaili Diploma in Histology, MSc, PhD, UK
Slide 2-

(Colon) Main functions: Absorption of water Formation of the fecal mass Production of mucus Consist of: colon (ascending, transferase and descending) Rectum and anal canal Large Intestine
Slide 3-

Large Intestine Mucosa: The large intestine consists of a mucosal membrane simple columnar epithelium No villi are present. The intestinal glands are long, stright and have a lot of goblet and absorptive cells. The absence of paneth cells

Slide 6-

Large Intestine The absorptive cells are columnar and have short, irregular microvilli. Mucus Is a highly hydrated gel Lubricates the intestinal surface Covers bacteria

Large intestine The lamina propria: is rich in lymphoid tissue because there is an abundant bacterial population. Muscular mucosa: narrow zone of inner circular and outer longitudinal Submucosa: no gland The muscularis: comprises longitudinal and circular strands. Fibres of the outer longitudinal layer congregate in three thick longitudinal bands called teniae coli. It is covered by the serous layer.

Rectum Histologically resemble the colon but: The goblet cells are numerous Lymphatic nodules are numerous The muscularis externa is thick

Anal canal Terminal part of the intestinal tract The crypts of lieberkuhun are short Mucosa has numerous permanent fold called anal columns The columns meet together to form anal valves Depression between anal columns are called anal sinuses Epithelium Upper third: simple columnar epithelium Middle third: stratified columnar+ simple columnar+ stratified squamous epithelium Lower third: stratified squamous then skin
Slide 14-

Lamina propria: fibroelastic CT, in skin surround the orifice, hire follicle and sebaceous gland Anal gland extend into submucosa and even into muscularis externa Muscularis mucosa: inner circular and outer longitudinal No muscularis mucosa at the middle third Submucosa: fibroelastic CT Muscularis externa: inner circular and outer longitudinal Inner circular form the internal anal sphincter Sighted muscle of pelvic floor form the external anal sphincter Adventitia
Slide 15-

Recto-anal junction Mucosa change from simple columnar to stratified squamous epithelium No muscularis mucosa in anal side Internal anal sphincter on the anal side Anal columns in the anal side

The appendix is an evagination of the cecum; It is characterized by a relatively small, narrow, and irregular lumen that is caused by the presence of abundant lymphoid follicles in its wall. Although its general structure is similar to that of the large intestine, It contains fewer and shorter intestinal glands and has no teniae coli. Muscularis mucosa poorly devolved Covered by serosa Appendix
