About This Presentation

Description : Infections During Pregnancy: Risks, Prevention, and Management
Infections during pregnancy can have significant impacts on the health of both mother and fetus. This presentation, "Infections During Pregnancy: Risks, Prevention, and Management," provides a detailed overview of common infections that may arise during pregnancy, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), Group B Streptococcus (GBS), toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus (CMV), listeriosis, and Zika virus. Each infection is discussed in terms of its causes, symptoms, risks, and the preventive measures essential to reducing complications.
Designed for healthcare providers and students in obstetrics, the presentation emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and effective management to protect maternal and fetal health. Topics include routine screenings, hygiene practices, and vaccination recommendations that play a crucial role in preventing and controlling infections during pregnancy. Visuals and infographics throughout the presentation illustrate transmission routes, symptoms, and treatment options to enhance understanding and retention.
By addressing these common infections and emphasizing prevention, this presentation equips healthcare providers with the knowledge to support pregnant patients in maintaining a healthy pregnancy. An essential resource for those dedicated to obstetric care, ensuring positive outcomes for both mothers and their babies.

Importance of Managing Infections in Pregnancy Infections during pregnancy can lead to complications for both mother and fetus. Some infections are preventable and manageable with timely intervention. Goal: Improve maternal and fetal outcomes through awareness and management. Speaker Notes: Pregnant women are more susceptible to certain infections due to immunologic and physiologic changes. Recognizing and managing these infections is crucial for the health of both the mother and the developing fetus. Reference: Goldenberg, R. L., & McClure, E. M. (2010). Infections and stillbirth: A global perspective. Clinics in Perinatology, 37(2), 339-354.

Common Infections During Pregnancy Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) Group B Streptococcus (GBS) Toxoplasmosis Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Listeriosis Zika Virus HIV and other STIs Speaker Notes: These infections vary in their effects on the mother and fetus, but early identification and intervention are key. Some, like GBS, have clear protocols for screening and prevention. Reference: Sheffield, J. S., & Cunningham, F. G. (2009). Infections and pregnancy. Obstetrics & Gynecology Clinics of North America, 36(2), 203-223.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) Causes: Escherichia coli is the most common pathogen. Symptoms: Painful urination, frequent urination, lower abdominal pain. Complications: If untreated, UTIs can lead to preterm labor or pyelonephritis. Management: Routine urine tests, antibiotics safe for pregnancy. Speaker Notes: UTIs are one of the most common infections during pregnancy. They must be treated promptly to avoid complications, such as kidney infections, which can affect pregnancy outcomes. Reference: Hooton, T. M. (2001). Urinary tract infections and asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy. Infectious Disease Clinics of North America, 17(2), 365-394.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) Screening: Routine screening at 35-37 weeks of pregnancy. Transmission: Can be transmitted from mother to baby during delivery. Risks to Newborn: Can cause sepsis, pneumonia, or meningitis in newborns. Prevention: Antibiotics during labor for GBS-positive mothers. Speaker Notes: GBS colonization is common in pregnant women. Screening and antibiotic treatment during labor for positive cases have proven effective in preventing newborn infections. Reference: Verani, J. R., McGee, L., & Schrag, S. J. (2010). Prevention of perinatal group B streptococcal disease. Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 59(RR-10), 1-32.
Slide 7-

Toxoplasmosis Cause: Infection by Toxoplasma gondii parasite. Transmission: Contact with cat feces, undercooked meat, contaminated soil. Effects on Fetus: May lead to congenital toxoplasmosis, causing vision and hearing loss, developmental delays. Prevention: Avoiding contact with cat litter, proper food hygiene. Speaker Notes: Toxoplasmosis is generally asymptomatic in mothers but can have severe effects on fetal development if transmitted during pregnancy. Preventive measures are essential. Reference: Dunn, D., Wallon, M., Peyron, F., Petersen, E., Peckham, C., & Gilbert, R. (1999). Mother-to-child transmission of toxoplasmosis: Risk estimates for clinical counseling. The Lancet, 353(9167), 1829-1833.
Slide 8-

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Transmission: Spread through bodily fluids. Symptoms: Often asymptomatic in the mother. Impact on Fetus: May cause hearing loss, vision impairment, developmental delays. Prevention: Hand hygiene, especially around young children. Speaker Notes: CMV is one of the most common congenital infections and a leading cause of long-term disabilities. Preventive practices, such as handwashing, are vital for pregnant women. Reference: Fowler, K. B., Stagno, S., & Pass, R. F. (2003). Maternal immunity and prevention of congenital cytomegalovirus infection. JAMA, 289(8), 1008-1011.
Slide 9-

Listeriosis Cause: Infection by Listeria monocytogenes. Source: Contaminated food (e.g., unpasteurized dairy, deli meats). Effects on Pregnancy: Can lead to miscarriage, preterm labor, or neonatal infection. Prevention: Avoid high-risk foods, maintain food hygiene. Speaker Notes: Listeriosis, though rare, can have severe effects on pregnancy outcomes. Pregnant women should avoid certain foods and practice safe food handling. Reference: Jackson, K. A., Iwamoto, M., & Swerdlow, D. (2010). Pregnancy-associated listeriosis. Epidemiology & Infection, 138(10), 1503-1509.
Slide 10-

Zika Virus Transmission: Mosquito bites, sexual transmission. Risks to Fetus: Can cause microcephaly and other severe birth defects. Prevention: Avoid traveling to high-risk areas, use mosquito repellents. Diagnosis and Management: Ultrasound and PCR testing for suspected cases. Speaker Notes: The Zika virus outbreak raised significant concerns about its effects on fetal development. Women in affected areas should take preventive steps to avoid infection. Reference: Rasmussen, S. A., Jamieson, D. J., Honein, M. A., & Petersen, L. R. (2016). Zika virus and birth
Slide 11-

Prevention and Management Strategies Vaccination: Flu, Tdap vaccines. Hygiene Practices: Handwashing, avoiding contaminated food and water. Screening and Testing: Regular screenings for GBS, HIV, and syphilis. Education: Informing pregnant women about risks and preventive measures. Speaker Notes: Preventing infections during pregnancy involves a multi-faceted approach, including vaccination, hygiene, screening, and education. Educating patients on these measures is crucial. Reference: ACOG Committee on Obstetric Practice. (2017). ACOG Committee Opinion No. 732: Influenza vaccination during pregnancy. Obstetrics & Gynecology, 130(5), e269-e273.

Key Takeaways
Slide 13-

Early diagnosis and treatment are vital for preventing complications. Patient education on hygiene and lifestyle changes can reduce infection risk. Regular screenings and vaccinations play a significant role in preventing infections. Speaker Notes: By prioritizing infection prevention and early treatment during pregnancy, healthcare providers can improve outcomes for both mother and child.
