The term hypnosis comes from the Greek word ‘ypnos’, which means sleep, and this has caused a misbelief that when you are hypnotized you’re unconscious and asleep. This is simply not the case. Autosuggestion, also known as autogenic training, is a means by which you can train your subconscious mind to focus on and be open to what is being heard. When trying to improve yourself, this is a good way to get past the mental barriers and doubts that can hold us back from accomplishing our aim or goals. Revisiting the goal After this point, the person will recall their aim and begin to visualize a scene that exemplifies it. For instance, if the aim is to achieve good sleep, they might imagine themselves peacefully getting to sleep. Alternatively, if the goal is to decrease stress, they might imagine themselves calmly dealing with the situation that triggers their stress. It may also be more helpful to affirm their objective while attending to these images.

Ending the hypnotic state After about 5 or 7 minutes of imagining the goal-directed imagery, it is time to exit the hypnotic state. A hypnotized person will do this by breathing deeply and slowly while imagining more energy entering the body with each and every breath. They may also use a countdown from 5 or 10 to help them exit the hypnotic state. When they feel prepared, they will slowly open their eyes.
