Images Hearing Loss: Hearing loss occurs when Something went wrong with the outer ear, the middle ear, the inner ear, the auditory nerve or even the part of the brain that controls hearing. Diagnosis and treatment of hearing Loss: For treatment of major hearing loss patient visit to the hearing aid doctor to fitted with a device which amplifies the sound. Hearing Aid Doctor may also prescribe about the cochlear implant depends upon the conditions. Why we need Hearing Aid?

Hearing Aid: Hearing Aid is an electronic device and battery operated devices which amplifies and changes the sound allow for communication. Functions of Hearing Aid: It amplifies the acoustics signal It uses both air and bone conduction pathway It enable hearing impaired individual to use his remaining hearing in a useful and efficient manner. Introduction to Hearing Aid

Microphone Microphone is a transducer that converts sound signal into a electric signal Range: 50-60000 Hz Amplifier It is a transformer which increases the amplitude of the electrical signal that is sent to the receiver. Battery The power supply of the hearing aid is derived from the battery eg: Zinc air and Mercury Receiver It changes modified electric signal back into the sound energy that is directed to the ear. Basic components Components of Hearing Aid

Digital Hearing Aid MIC ADC DSP DAC REC Memory Audiometer/programmer DAC = Digital to Analog Converter REC = Receiver ADC = Analog to Digital Converter DSP = Digital Signal MIC = Microphone Processor Sound waves picked up by the microphone and transformed into electrical signals are converted into digital form by an ADC Converter. The DSP is a fixed (wired program) digital processing devices containing an array of adders, multiplier and registers which provide fundamental operation necessary for implementing various digital algorithm. DSP is associated with two port memory which is used to store parameters that can be downloaded from the external hearing aid.

Digital Hearing Aid Features of Digital Hearing Aid The modern hearing aid became possible with the invention of the transistor, which has enabled to develop small, power-efficient amplifier circuits that could be packed in a form that fits behind or in the ear. Bluetooth or Wireless Connectivity. Digital Noise Reduction. Automatic Volume Adjustments
Slide 11-

Digital Hearing Aid Advantages of Digital Hearing Aid Selectively amplifies sounds. Reduces feedback Automatically adjusts the volume to environment. Directional microphones. Improved sound quality. Disadvantages of Digital Hearing Aid Generally more expensive than analog hearing aids. Cheap and poor quality digital hearing aids are often sold online or over the counter by off-brand manufacturers.

Cochlear Implant

Introduction to Cochlear implant A cochlear implant (CI) is a surgically implanted neuroprosthesis that provides a person who has bilateral moderate-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. A cochlear implant helps people with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss or nerve deafness. The treatment of choice for the sensori-neural deaf is the cochlear prosthesis or cochlear implant.

Components of Cochlear Implant There are several systems available, they have the following components: External: one or more microphones that pick up sound from the environment a speech processor which selectively filters sound to prioritize audible speech a transmitter that sends power and the processed sound signals across the skin to the internal device by radio frequency transmission Internal: A receiver/stimulator, which receives signals from the speech processor and converts them into electric impulses An electrode array embedded in the cochlea
Slide 16-

Block Diagram of Cochlear Implant The devices pick up sound and digitize it, Convert that digitized sound into electrical signals, And transmit those signals to electrodes embedded in the cochlea. An array of electrodes which is placed into the cochlea, stimulate the cochlear nerve. The cochlear nerve, causing it to send signals to the brain.

Characteristics of Cochlear Implant Types of Cochlear Implant Electrode design Number of electrodes and their configurations Type of stimulation: Analog or pulsatile Transmission link: Transcutaneous or percutaneous Signal processing: Waveform representation or feature extraction
Slide 18-

Benefits and risks of Cochlear Implant Benefits: Hearing ranges from near normal ability to understand speech to no hearing benefit at all. Children may improve at a slower pace Most perceive loud, medium and soft sounds. Risks: Injury to the facial nerve Infection to the skin

Conclusion and Reference Conclusions: In case of critical cases like sensori-deaf doctors mostly prescribe cochlear implant. while in case of severe and profound hearing loss mostly hearing aid is used.
