Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Eating a well-balanced diet can help you get the calories and nutrients you need to fuel your daily activities Without enough fuel, you will not be able to perform well at the activity you are doing
Slide 5-

Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Food is made up of 3 different macronutrients that provide calories (energy): Carbohydrates Protein Fat
Slide 6-

Carbohydrates Provide the main energy that fuels your muscles for physical activity Once eaten, carbohydrates break down into smaller sugars (glucose, fructose, and galactose) that get absorbed and used as energy
Slide 7-

Carbohydrates Any glucose that is not needed right away gets stored in the muscles and the liver as glycogen Glycogen stores are converted back into glucose as the body needs more fuel Glycogen is the source of energy most often used for exercise

Slide 9-

Protein Protein is important to help build and repair muscles that you need for exercise It is also important for growth and development

Don’t Forget About Hydration! Being active increases your needs due to the fluids you lose through sweat If you don’t drink enough to replace your sweat losses, you can become dehydrated. This can leave you overheated, tired and hurt your performance.
Slide 14-

Don’t Forget About Hydration! Signs of dehydration are thirst, dizziness, headache, and muscle cramps. Severe dehydration can increase the risk for heat illness and heat stroke.
Slide 15-

Stay Hydrated Drink throughout the day. Choose water or unflavoured milk and fortified soy beverages most often. Avoid sugary drinks like pop and fruit juice. Drink water during activity to keep you hydrated. If the activity is intense and last longer than an hour, a sport drink may be needed. They contain electrolytes (minerals, like salt and potassium) to replace what is lost during sweating. They also contain carbohydrates for energy.
