About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "GENES, MUTATIONS & DISEASES-UNDERSTANDING THE ORIGINS OF GENETIC DISORDERS”.

This medical PowerPoint presentation is about genes, mutations and genetic disorders.

Genes are the basic units of heredity that determine the traits we inherit from our parents. They are made up of DNA sequences that encode instructions for the synthesis of proteins, which carry out a wide variety of functions in our bodies.

Mutations are changes that occur in the DNA sequence of a gene, which can result in altered protein synthesis or function. Some mutations may have no effect on the protein, while others may alter its function or expression, leading to a variety of genetic disorders.

Genetic disorders can be inherited in different ways depending on the specific gene involved. Some disorders are caused by a single gene mutation, such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia, while others may be caused by mutations in multiple genes or complex interactions between genes and environmental factors.

Mutations can occur spontaneously, as a result of errors during DNA replication or exposure to environmental factors such as radiation or chemicals, or they can be inherited from parents who carry the mutated gene.

Some genetic disorders are more common in certain populations due to genetic variations that have arisen over time. For example, sickle cell anemia is more prevalent in individuals of African descent, while Tay-Sachs disease is more common in individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish descent.

Advances in genetic testing and sequencing technologies have allowed for earlier detection and diagnosis of genetic disorders, as well as targeted treatments based on a patients specific genetic profile.

Overall, understanding the origins of genetic disorders requires a comprehensive understanding of genes, mutations, and their interactions, as well as the environmental and cultural factors that contribute to their prevalence and impact.

ACTIVITY #1 MITOSIS In plants, roots continue to grow as they search for water and nutrients. These regions of growth are useful for studying mitosis because at any given time, you can find cells that are undergoing mitosis. Can you identify cells in each stage of mitosis? http://galleryhip.com/ http://cherlyncreative2biology.blogspot.com/

MEIOSIS In humans, meiosis reduces the number of chromosomes from 46 (23 pairs) to 23 (single). Sex cells are produced by meiosis. in humans n = 23 diploid haploid http://bio.rutgers.edu/
