GERD can occur in people of all ages, but it is more common in adults and people who are overweight, pregnant, or have a hiatal hernia. Other factors that can contribute to GERD include smoking, certain medications, and eating large meals or lying down after eating.

Treatment for GERD may include lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and dietary modifications, as well as medications to reduce stomach acid production or neutralize the acid. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

If left untreated, GERD can lead to complications such as esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), Barretts esophagus (a precancerous condition), and esophageal cancer. Therefore, it is important to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms of GERD.
