The process of fetal development can be divided into three main stages: the germinal stage, the embryonic stage, and the fetal stage.

Germinal stage: This stage begins at fertilization and lasts for about 2 weeks. During this stage, the zygote (fertilized egg) undergoes multiple cell divisions and travels down the fallopian tube towards the uterus, where it implants in the uterine wall. The developing structure is called a blastocyst at this point.
Embryonic stage: This stage begins after implantation and lasts from the third to the eighth week of gestation. During this stage, the embryo undergoes rapid cell division and differentiation, forming the three germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm) that will give rise to all of the bodys organs and tissues. The embryo develops a primitive heart, brain, spinal cord, and other vital organs. By the end of the embryonic stage, the embryo is about 1 inch long and has most of its major organs and structures.
Fetal stage: This stage begins at the end of the embryonic stage and lasts from the ninth week until birth. During this stage, the fetus undergoes further growth and development, and its organs and systems continue to mature and become functional. The fetus gains weight and length and develops its musculoskeletal, respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems. By the end of the fetal stage, the fetus is fully developed and ready to be born.

Throughout fetal development, the fetus is vulnerable to environmental factors such as nutrition, drugs, and exposure to toxins. Adequate prenatal care, including regular medical check-ups, proper nutrition, and avoidance of harmful substances, can help ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
