Female reproductive system
Slide 2-

Female reproductive system Females have both external and internal female reproductive organs. *The vulva are the external organs of the female reproductive system. External Organs: mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vaginal opening, hymen,& bartholin’s glands. Internal Organs: Vagina, cervix, uterus, endometrium, fallopian tubes, ovaries, ova(eggs).
Slide 3-

External Organs The mons pubis is a pad of fatty tissue that covers the front of the pubic bone. Serves as a protective cushion for the female reproductive organs. During puberty, hair begins to grow that covers the mons pubis. Labia Majora are heavy folds of skin surrounding the opening of the vagina. They are richly supplied with nerve endings and blood vessels. Labia Minora are two smaller folds of skin surrounding the opening of the vagina. They contain sweat, oil glands, and nerve endings.

External organs cont… Clitoris is a small cylindrical structure that projects between the labia minora. The body of the clitoris becomes enlarged with blood vessels when a female is sexually aroused. Can a woman experience an erection? YES! ….Clitoral erections Vaginal Opening is the opening from the vagina to the outside of the body. Also known as the birth canal. Hymen is a thin membrane that stretches across the vaginal opening, and in the center of the hymen is a small opening where the menstrual flow leaves the body. Tampons are inserted through the opening of the hymen to collect menstrual flow.

Internal Organs Vagina is a muscular passageway that lies between the bladder and the rectum, and serves as the female organ for intercourse, the birth canal, and menstrual flow. Extends from the uterus to the outside of the body. Made up of 3 layers: Mucous richly supplied with blood vessels Muscular layer Elastic layer

Vagina cont… Walls of the vagina are usually close together, but stretch apart during sexual intercourse and while giving child birth. The vagina is usually acidic and is mixed with lubricating fluids from the cervix to help prevent any pathogens growing inside.
Slide 8-

Cervix Cervix is a cylinder-shaped neck of tissue that connects the vagina and uterus The cervix produces cervical mucus that changes in consistency during the menstrual cycle to prevent or promote pregnancy. The narrowed cervix keeps the embryo inside the womb during pregnancy. During childbirth, the cervix dilates widely to allow the baby to pass through. During menstruation, the cervix opens a small amount to permit passage of menstrual flow.

Uterus Uterus is a pear-shaped, muscular organ designed to house a developing embryo. The uterus is also called the “womb”. The endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus that consists of spongy tissue that has many glands & blood vessels. Each month it becomes thicker to prepare for a fertilized ovum and implant and grow. When there is no fertilized ovum it is shed as the menstrual flow.

The Fallopian tubes Fallopian Tubes (oviducts) are tubes that extend from the ovaries to the uterus. Function of the fallopian tubes is to transport the ova to the uterus. The contractions of the muscular walls of the fallopian tubes create a suction that can pull an ovum into the tube. Inside, cilia (hair-like follicles) line the fallopian tubes to help move the ova to the uterus. An ovum moves at the rate of 1 inch every 24 hours. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes when the ovum is usually healthy and alive for approximately 24-48 hours.

OVARIes Ovaries are two almond-shaped female sex glands that produce ova (eggs) and secrete hormones. At birth the ovaries of a female baby contain immature, or unripened ova.
Slide 13-

Ovaries cont… Puberty is the stage of growth and development when both male & female can produce offspring. When a female is approximately 8 yrs old, the pituitary gland in the brain secretes Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). *Both males & females have FSH. FSH is secreted into the bloodstream and travels to the ovaries to cause the ovaries to secrete estrogen. Estrogen is a female sex hormone that produces female secondary sex characteristics & affects the menstrual cycle.
Slide 14-

Ovaries CONT. Menopause – The period in a woman’s life when she ceases to release ova (eggs). Occurs 12 months after her last menstrual cycle. Once a woman hits menopause, she can no longer get pregnant naturally The average in the United States is 51, however it can occur anywhere in a woman’s 40’s
