Introduction Childbirth has always been an event connected to the existence of life, and thereby it is rational to feel fearful that something uncontrollable could happen. The paradox is that even if maternity care today is very safe, fear of childbirth is a problem, often manifested as stress symptoms, an influence on everyday life, a request for a caesarean section or a wish to avoid pregnancy and childbirth.

Introduction Fear of childbirth is related to depression, vulnerability, lack of social support, lack of trust in health-care staff and a previous negative childbirth experience. Fear of childbirth can increase the risk of complicated childbirth and emergency caesarean section. A traumatic birth experience or a complicated birth increases the risk for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Introduction At the time of this study, women with signs of severe fear of childbirth could contact the ‘Aurorateam’ by phone after receiving advice from her midwife or doctor at the maternity centre. After appraisal from the team, the woman had two or three counselling sessions with a specialist midwife at the hospital, with some women receiving five or more sessions.

Introduction They were focused on the woman’s fear, how it was experienced by her and how it affected her. Information and education were given by the midwife, including visits to the labour ward. A birth plan according to the woman’s wishes was developed. Women expressing severe psychological or psychiatric difficulties were also referred to a psychologist.

Introduction Studies about the effectiveness of treatment for fear of childbirth show that individual psychological and obstetric support is successful: women who were treated showed a reduction of pregnancy-related concerns, a withdrawal of requests for caesarean sections by 50–62%, and successful and shorter vaginal births compared with women who were not treated.

Methods Setting: Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Go¨teborg, Sweden in 2013. Participants: eight pregnant women (24–37 gestational weeks) seeking help within an outpatient clinic for women with severe fear of childbirth (experience of fear in previous delivery) Two of the women were primiparous. and 10 women in post partum. Findings: 10 constituents were identified. “ 10 themes and statements”
