Housing Link between poor housing and health Increased length of exposure to poor housing leads to worsened health Overcrowding: increased risk of infectious disease including tuberculosis .Affects mental well-being, depression, stress Unsafe outside, unhealthy inside

Housing Excess winter mortality, poor ventilation, increased respiratory infections Mold: respiratory problems, asthma, allergies, eczema Indoor pollutants and infestation: asthma

Criteria for Healthful housing Provides for protection from hazards of exposure to noise and pollution. Is free from unsafe physical factors due to construction or maintenance and from toxic or harmful materials. Encourage personal and community development, promotes social relationships, reflects a regard for ecological principles and by these means promotes mental health

Site: Elevated from surroundings to prevent flooding during rain. Away from breeding places for flies, mosquitoes, away from noise, dust, smoke etc .On dry soil, well drained Floor: Impermeable, Easy to clean, Smooth & damp free

Walls: Strong, Low heat capacity, Weather resistant. Not suitable for breeding of rats, pests Roof: Height ,not less than 10 feet

Noise pollution What is noise pollution? Decibel- a dimensionless unit used for values on a scale. Intensity -the rate that energy is transferred through a unit area of the plane wave Threshold- minimum of sound level of a pure tone that an average ear with normal hearing can hear with no other sound present Threshold of pain- the point in which pain begins to be felt Noise Pollution is… A loud noise interrupting someone’s regular sound waves. (unwanted or uncomfortable sound to the ear)

What are some examples of noise pollution? Examples: A phone Sirens ,A plane taking off, A book being slammed, A balloon popping, Someone screaming, A loud clap, DJ or a band Dog barking, Car blasting music

The effects of noise pollution. Deaf: >90dB, 4000Hz. Lack of sleep, Irritability, Indigestion, Heartburn, High blood pressure, Ulcers, Heart disease, Paranoid The governments actions! Enforcing laws and starting awareness programs!...Such as… Careful city planning, intervening zones with trees Control of vehicles, Better acoustic insulation of buildings ,Personal protection ( do not use head phones too frequently at loud volume levels)
