About This Presentation

Description : Check out this medical PowerPoint presentation titled "Endocrine System" by David Shier, Jackie Butler and Ricki Lewis.

This medical PowerPoint presentation talks about the endocrine system, a collection of glands and organs in the body that produce and secrete hormones into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate many different processes in the body, including growth and development, metabolism, sexual function, and mood.

The major glands of the endocrine system include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries (in females), and testes (in males). Each of these glands produces and secretes different hormones, which have specific effects on different tissues and organs throughout the body.

The pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain, is often referred to as the "master gland" of the endocrine system because it controls the activity of many of the other glands. It produces hormones that regulate growth and development, as well as the functioning of the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and reproductive organs.

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, produces hormones that regulate metabolism and energy production. The parathyroid glands, which are located next to the thyroid gland, produce a hormone that regulates the levels of calcium in the blood.

The adrenal glands, located on top of the kidneys, produce hormones that help regulate stress responses, blood pressure, and electrolyte balance. The pancreas, located behind the stomach, produces hormones that regulate blood sugar levels, as well as digestive enzymes.

In females, the ovaries produce hormones that regulate reproductive function, while in males, the testes produce hormones that regulate the development of male sexual characteristics.

Overall, the endocrine system plays a critical role in maintaining homeostasis, or a stable internal environment, within the body. Dysfunctions of the endocrine system can lead to a variety of disorders, including diabetes, thyroid disorders, and hormonal imbalances.

11 - 2 Chapter 11 Endocrine System
Slide 3-

11 - 3 Introduction A. The endocrine system is made up of the cells, tissues, and organs that secrete hormones into body fluids. B. The body has two kinds of glands, exocrine (secretes products into ducts) and endocrine (secrete products into body fluids to affect target cells). CopyrightThe McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. Slide 9-

11 - 9 D. Nonsteroid Hormones 1. Nonsteroid hormones combine with receptors in target cell membranes; the receptors have a binding site and an activity site. 2. The hormone-receptor complex (as first messenger) triggers a cascade of biological activity. CopyrightThe McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. Permission required for reproduction or display.
Slide 10-

11 - 10 3. The hormone-receptor complex generally activates a G protein, which then activates the enzyme adenylate cyclase that is bound to the inner cell membrane. CopyrightThe McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. Permission required for reproduction or display.
