Endocannabinoids
Slide 2-

ENDROGENOUS, LIPID-BASED NEUROTRANSMITTER Found in all mammals Main Function: Homeostasis AFFECTS MAJOR HOMEOSTATIC FUNCTIONS ENERGY INFLAMMATION SLEEP APPETITE PAIN DEVELOPMENT IMMUNE SUPPORT MEMORY/LEARNING Not fully understood and their importance to homeostasis is understated What are Endocannabinoids
Slide 3-

2-AG (2-ARACHIDONOYLGLYCEROL) ANADAMINE Not “pre-made” Calcium/certain Glutamate & GABA receptors trigger enzymes for production Retrograde Inhibitory TWO TYPES OF ENDOCANNABINOIDS*
Slide 4-

CB1 and CB2 Located on pre-synaptic neurons CB1= CNS (Hippocampus, cingulate gyrus, cerebellum, brainstem, and more) Most abundant receptor in mammalian brain Pain, Appetite, Memory THC binds with cb1 Cb2= mainly PNS (liver, spleen, b-cells, t-cells, etc.) and CNS (microglial cells, etc.) Inflammation receptors
Slide 5-

Binds to both receptors Plays a role in: Mood Memory Appetite Pain relief Blissful state from exercise and meditation Runners high Close to THC in chemical makeup ANANDAMINE
Slide 6-

Much higher concentration in the brain than anandamine Binds to both receptors but especially cb1 Aids in: Locomotion Neuroinflammation after brain injuries Pain sensation (blocked by cb1) Food intake (hypothalamus/forebrain during fasting) Mood Learning and memory 2-AG
Slide 7-

ECS=Anandamine, AG-2, CB1, CB2, and their respective enzymes Not yet fully understood, yet responsible for large portion of body homeostasis support. What we know is just the tip of the iceberg… ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM
