This medical PowerPoint presentation is about duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a genetic disorder that primarily affects boys and is caused by a mutation in the gene that codes for the protein dystrophin. Dystrophin is essential for maintaining the structure and function of muscle fibers.

Without dystrophin, the muscles become progressively weaker and eventually waste away, leading to difficulty in walking and eventually loss of ambulation. Symptoms typically appear in early childhood, and the condition worsens over time.

Other symptoms of DMD include delayed motor milestones, enlarged calf muscles, difficulty with running and jumping, difficulty with fine motor skills, scoliosis, and breathing difficulties. DMD is a progressive condition that can ultimately lead to heart and respiratory failure.

There is currently no cure for DMD, but there are treatments that can help manage the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. These include corticosteroids, which can help increase muscle strength and delay the onset of respiratory and cardiac problems, and physical therapy, which can help maintain mobility and flexibility. In recent years, gene therapies have also shown promise in treating DMD, and research in this area is ongoing.
