On the map The Dominican Republic is 2 thirds of the island Hispaniola on the Caribbean sea that is shared with Haiti. The land is separated into 31 provinces. Image Source

The Populace The general population of The Dominican Republic is 11 million people. The total population is on the rise, but the annual growth rate of the population has decreased to less than 1 percent in recent years. Approximately 73 percent of the population is mixed, 16 percent is white, and 11 percent is black.

Additional Demographics -The median age in the Dominican Republic is 28 years old- 50% of the country is catholic, 23% are protestant, 2% are Muslim, and the other 18 are unaffiliated with any religion. -The Main language spoken is Dominican Spanish, and it’s spoken by 85% of the population.-In 2019 the poverty rate in the Dominican Republic was 21%-Approx. 29.5% of the population is under 15, 64% of the population is between 16 and 64 years old, and 6.5% of the population is 65 years or older.

Health Beliefs in the Dominican Republic -Many Hispanics believe that illness stems from bad environmental conditions, supernaturality, and one’s given emotional state.-Due to this belief system, and lack of necessary equipment, physical disabilities are more accepted than mental disabilities. -This then causes People with physical disabilities to seek treatment immediately, but for mental disabilities, seeking treatment is looked at as a last resort. People who find themselves with mental disabilities are isolated and looked after by family members. Having to send someone for further treatment (Hospitalization) is taken as a failure to take care of one of their own.Source.**

Health Issues and Risks Some of the top leading causes of death in the Dominican Republic (According to the WHO in 2018) are HIV, Heart disease (Coronary), Stroke, Violence, Prostate Cancer, Schistosomiasis, and Hypertension .Risk Factors that could lead to demises such as these are:-High Salt Intake-Lack of Exercise-Smoking-Obesity in Adolescents-Diabetes in adults-Raised blood pressure in adults-Excessive amounts of alcohol-High Blood Pressure

Barriers to Health Care Lack of financial and human resources-Implementations were supposed to have been put in place to assist with managing the number of NCD’s and risk factors associated with them, but due to not having enough money or equipment, The National Chronic Non-communicable Disease Control and Prevention Program in 2008 could not be fully put into actionStruggle to get what is necessary. According to a survey study that was conducted in the communities Los Mina and Paraiso in 2014, just over 20% of the residents in both communities said they almost always had a hard time getting Medications they needed. In addition to this, it was also found in this study that due to the variations on how much insurance could cover on different medications, a lot of residents barely got any insurance coverage on medications they needed.

Moving Forward After the survey done in Los Mina and Paraiso, the conclusion was drawn the focus should be to assess what is resulting in a decrease in the use of medical services. Then when the necessary barriers are found, healthcare needs will be met and NCD’s can be kept under control.

Treatments Current Treatment for some NCD’s and illnesses go as follows:HIV – Needle and Syringe programs provide clean needles to thus stop the spread of HIV and AIDS (No current cure for HIV)Malaria – When in its early stages in can be treated with Antimalarial medication. Also, the mosquitos that transmit the infection can be killed with insecticides Schistosomiasis – Taking a specific anti-parasitic medication known as Praziquantel can treat Schistosomiasis. In addition, since this disease is contracted from worms containing the parasite in dirty water, If poorer communities were renovated and received cleaner water, the virus would cease to spread. Treatments (Continued) Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) - Eating a healthy diet, staying away from high amounts of salt, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, and dealing with stress properly will decrease your chances of getting hypertension.Stroke – Staying away from too much alcohol, controlling your diabetes, not having high blood pressure, having a healthy diet, and exercising often will decrease your risk of having a stroke.Heart Disease – Being active, not smoking, maintaining a healthy stress level, exercising regularly, Maintaining a healthy diet, and maintaining a healthy weight are all ways to decrease your chances of having heart disease.
