About This Presentation

Description : Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, presenting a significant public health challenge. This epidemiological overview explores the prevalence, risk factors, and trends associated with CHD across different populations. By analyzing global and regional data, the report highlights disparities in incidence rates, the impact of lifestyle and genetic predispositions, and the effectiveness of preventive measures. Understanding the epidemiology of CHD is crucial for developing targeted interventions, promoting heart health awareness, and improving patient outcomes.

Coronary Heart Disease: An Epidemiological Overview Coronary heart disease (CHD) is reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. It remains the leading cause of death worldwide. This presentation explores CHD's epidemiology, risk factors, imaging, treatment, prevention, and future research directions.
Slide 2-

Anatomy & Pathology Refresher Coronary Arteries Includes left main, LAD, circumflex, and right coronary arteries. Atherosclerosis Plaque narrows arteries, reducing blood flow. Ischemia Partial blockage causing chest pain (angina). Infarction Complete blockage leads to heart attack (MI).
Slide 3-

Global Burden of Coronary Heart Disease In 2019, 18.6 million deaths worldwide were due to cardiovascular diseases. CHD accounts for nearly half of all cardiovascular deaths globally. High-income countries see declining CHD rates from interventions. Low- and middle-income countries face rising CHD due to lifestyle changes.
Slide 4-

Key Risk Factors: Modifiable Hypertension Blood pressure above 130/80 mmHg increases CHD risk. Hyperlipidemia High LDL cholesterol (>130 mg/dL) promotes plaque buildup. Smoking Doubles risk of myocardial infarction. Diabetes & Obesity Diabetes raises risk 2-4 times; obesity BMI >30 kg/m² is significant. Physical Inactivity Less than 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly raises risk.
Slide 5-

Key Risk Factors: Non-Modifiable Age Risk rises sharply after 45 in men, 55 in women. Sex Men face higher early risk; women equalize post-menopause. Family History Premature CHD in first-degree relatives increases personal risk. Genetics & Ethnicity Mutations like familial hypercholesterolemia and ethnic background affect risk.
Slide 6-

Diagnostic Tools & Imaging Electrocardiogram: Detects heart’s electrical abnormalities. Echocardiogram: Visualizes heart structure and motion. Coronary Angiography: Gold standard to visualize artery blockages. CT Angiography: Non-invasive artery imaging alternative. Accurate imaging guides diagnosis and interventional treatments for CHD.
Slide 7-

Treatment Strategies 1 Lifestyle Modifications Healthy diet, exercise, and quitting smoking are foundational. 2 Medications Includes antiplatelets, statins, beta-blockers, and ACE inhibitors. 3 PCI Angioplasty and stenting for artery revascularization. 4 Coronary Bypass Surgery Used for severe or multiple blockages.
Slide 8-

Prevention Strategies: Primary Population Intervention Campaigns to encourage healthy lifestyles reduce CHD risk. Screening Early identification of high-risk individuals. Policy Tobacco taxes and sugary drink regulations promote heart health. Risk Factor Management Control early hypertension and cholesterol for prevention.
Slide 9-

Prevention Strategies: Secondary Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise and education post-MI to recover and prevent recurrence. Medication Adherence Consistent drug use crucial to avoid further cardiac events. Manage Co-morbidities Control diabetes, hypertension to reduce additional risks. Regular Follow-up Ongoing care ensures early problem detection and management.

Future Directions & Research Personalized Medicine Treatments based on patient genetics and biomarkers for efficacy. 1 Novel Therapies Focus on inflammation control and plaque stabilization. 2 Advanced Imaging Better detection and risk stratification tools emerging. 3 Health Equity Efforts to close gaps in CHD outcomes across populations. 4
