ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Contrast media is a viscous iodinated solution used to opacify the coronary arteries. It is a chemical substances of very high or very low atomic number or weight. Therefore it increases or decreases the density of the organ under examination. The major properties of contrast agents are viscocity, ionic versus non-ionic and osmolarity. Compounds used to improve the visibility of internal body structures in an image is called contrast agent.

Contrast agent contain iodine which is an appropriate concentration is an effective absorber of x-ray in the energy range of clinical imaging system. Contrast media is primarily divided into two categories. They are high osmolar contrast media(hocm) and low osmolar contrast media(locm). Most non ionic agents are placed into the locm category while all ionic agents are in the hocm category

AIM The aim of the study is about the contrast media used in catheterizaton laboratory in patient undergoing coronary angiography and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. OBJECTIVE To analyse the contrast agent used in coronary angiography and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Review the complication of contrast media

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY: Hundred and fifty patients who are undergoing coronary angiography and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty were randomly selected. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study STUDY PERIOD: 6 months

SAMPLE SIZE: 150 patients SAMPLING TECHNIQUE: Randomized sample PROJECT AREA: Catheterization laboratory, ICVD MMM.

CRITERIA FOR SAMPLE SELECTION: INCLUSION CRITERIA: ➢ Patient undergoing coronary angiography. ➢ Patient undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. EXCLUSION CRITERIA: ➢ Patient undergoing paediatric cardiac interventional procedures. ➢ Patient undergoing peripheral interventions. ➢ Patient undergoing electrophysiology studies and other device implantations(ppi,crt-p,crt-d).
