CIC OVERVIEW What is certification? Certification has, as its primary purpose, the increased protection of the public by providing an objective measurement of standardized current knowledge recognized and respected within and outside the field of infection prevention and control.
Slide 3-

Candidate Handbook General Information About the Certification Examination . The infection control certification examination is the standardized measure of the basic knowledge, skills and abilities expected of professionals working in infection prevention and control.

WHY CIC Providing standardized measurement of current essential knowledge needed for persons practicing infection prevention and control; Encouraging individual growth and study, thereby promoting professionalism among professionals in infection prevention and control; and Formally recognizing professionals in infection prevention and control who fulfill the requirements for certification and recertification.

CBIC (Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology) Established by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc (APIC) in 1981; CBIC is an affiliate of APIC 1982 became an independent board After successful exam the candidates become CIC (Certified in Infection Control & Epidemiology)
Slide 8-

CIC OVERVIEW Is certification well established and well recognized? - In 1982, APICCA changed its name to the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC). The organization is now called the Certification Board for Infection Control & Epidemiology (still CBIC) to reflect current practice, which encompasses applied epidemiology.
Slide 9-

CIC OVERVIEW - The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredits CBIC’s certification program, which signifies that CBIC has met the highest national voluntary standards for private certification and also strongly recommended from Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC) & the Community Hospital Infection Control Association (CHICA- Canada).

SCORE The examination consists of 150 questions, the candidate’s score is based on 135 questions. Fifteen questions on each exam are “pretest” questions and are used as part of the item evaluation for inclusion in subsequent exams. The method used to set the minimum passing score is the Angoff method, in which content experts have evaluated each examination question and determined how many correct answers are necessary to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to pass.
Slide 26-

SCORE Passing scores may vary slightly for each version of the examination. To ensure fairness to all candidates, a process of statistical equating is used. This involves selecting an appropriate mix of individual questions for each version of the examination that meets the content distribution requirements of the examination content blueprint. Slight variations in difficulty level between different versions of the exam are addressed by adjusting the passing score up or down, depending on the overall difficulty level statistics .
