The Facts A study of children who watched television at ages 1 and 3 years were found to have had a significantly increased risk of developing attention problems by age 7. With each hour of television watched per day, there was a 9% increase in problems consistent with a diagnosis of ADHD. "Time for a View on Screen Time: Brain and Cognition." 2013. 5 Feb. 2015
Slide 14-

The Facts High levels of early childhood television viewing resulting in reduced time for social interactions may prevent the development of adequate social skills. "Time for a View on Screen Time: Brain and Cognition." 2013. 5 Feb. 2015
Slide 15-

The Facts Dopamine, a key component of the brain's reward system, is released in the brain while children play video games. Because of the link between dopamine and addiction, some are concerned that excessive game playing may lead to changes in the brain that resemble substance dependence. Language Delay In children under 3, the use of screen media is linked to a delay in language acquisition. Research shows that adolescents that watched 1 additional hour of television each day as toddlers have lower math scores and poorer school achievement.
Slide 17-

Fast-Paced Television Research shows that just 20 minutes of a fast-paced, animated show can negatively impact executive functioning skills in young children. Executive functioning skills include attention span, delaying gratification, self-regulation, and problem solving.

Context “It’s not whether or not your child is staring into a screen that will or will not determine if his or her infant brain becomes, instead of a genius brain, tapioca pudding. It’s what’s on that screen that matters.” (Stein)

Reasons for Limiting Screen Time Gets in the way of exploring, playing, and social interaction. As kids get older, screen time can get in the way of being active, reading, doing homework, playing with friends, and spending time with family. Kids who spend more time watching TV are more likely to be overweight or obese.
Slide 29-

Ways to Limit Screen Time Keep the TV/computer out of sight Put it in rooms not used by children Hide it with a blanket or sheet Get rid of it Replace screen time with fun, interactive activities Play outside Turn on music and dance Bring kids into the kitchen and let them help you set the table, cook, and clean up

Slide 31-

When screen time is allowed: Make it “quality programming” by choosing shows or computer games that are educational or get kids moving. Track screen time with a simple scheduling sheet so you know how much screen time a child has and when they’ve reached their limit for the week. Avoid watching while eating. Touch screen technology does NOT count as ‘active’ screen time. Watch the quality of children’s movement with active video games.

Books are Best! “Nothing stimulates the intellect like a good book” –Richard Lewis, UK Books require children to use their imaginations more than electronic devices. E-readers and other devices distance young children from the real-world whereas books provide children with hands-on experience. Paper books allow children to stay engaged with a story more than devices because devices have buttons to push and games to play.
Slide 34-

“It could be argued that active play is so central to child development that it should be included in the very definition of childhood”. –American Academy of Pediatrics
Slide 35-

Recommendations “Children should have lots of time for play in the real, 3-D world,” and parents should “make screen use a shared experience.”
