ION CHANNELS & CARRIER PROTEINS
Slide 13-

ION CHANNELS are found in all cells, and are especially important for the function of excitable cells (eg. neurons and muscle cells). Ion channels are classified by their selectivity, conductance and mechanism of channel gating. CARRIER PROTEINS bind with molecules or ions that are to be transported, and conformational changes in the protein molecules then move the substances through the interstices of the protein to the other side of the membrane.

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE TRANSPORT
Slide 18-

TYPES OF PASSIVE TRANSPORT
Slide 19-

SIMPLE DIFFUSION Movement of small, nonpolar substances from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane without the assistance of carrier or channels.
Slide 20-

Movement of large, charged, and polar molecules down their concentration gradient; assisted across a selectively permeable membrane by a transport protein FACILITATED DIFFUSION
Slide 21-

OSMOSIS Movement of solvent particles across a semipermeable membrane from a dilute solution into a concentrated solution. T
Slide 22-

FILTRATION Movement of molecules from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure.
