ION CHANNELS are found in all cells, and are especially important for the function of excitable cells (eg. neurons and muscle cells). Ion channels are classified by their selectivity, conductance and mechanism of channel gating. CARRIER PROTEINS bind with molecules or ions that are to be transported, and conformational changes in the protein molecules then move the substances through the interstices of the protein to the other side of the membrane.
