Preterm Definition :- Preterm or babies born too early, less than 37 weeks of gestation – they can be further classified into three sub categories - extreme (>28 weeks/>LBW of 800 gms) moderate preterm (>32 weeks/LBW of 1500 gms) and late preterms (>37 weeks/) Stats : Nearly 85 percent of preterm babies are born between 32 and 37 weeks gestation and most of these babies do not need intensive care to survive. than 37 weeks gestation - Essential newborn care (drying, warming, immediate and exclusive breastfeeding, hygiene and cord care) as well as basic care for feeding support, infections and breathing difficulties can mean the difference between life and death for small babies - In India, 3,341,000 babies are born too soon each year and 329,900 children under five die due to direct preterm complications - Much is already being done to prevent preterm birth and low birth weight and to improve outcomes for small babies. - As government leaders, civil society organizations, health workers, families, communities and other partners come together to enact change, we can prevent babies from being born too early and too small, and ensure that small babies get the critical life-saving care and nurturing they need. – Hencce there is an increase in the survival of the preterms and in parallel we see an increase in preterm birth rate from 12 – 15 %(2010) to 18%- 22% 2017 Reasons as to why Preterm birth is on an incline – More success in fertility processes such as IVF’s Air pollution Lifestyle changes Late pregnancies in woman Anemia/reproductory problems – PCOS/OD, thyroid, infertility, stress some common causes
