Gastric banding Around half of all surgical procedures of Bariatric surgeries putting an adjustable band around the upper stomach leaving a small pouch just below the cardia The degree of restriction can be controlled by the amount of fluid injected into the subcutaneous port. Complications of the band : Fail due to prolapse of the stomach the band can slip up or down from its initial position. Bands can also erode into the stomach.

Sleeve Gastrectomy The outer margin of the stomach is removed to restrict food intake, leaving a sleeve of stomach “the size and shape of a banana” , and the pylorus, the muscle that controls emptying of food from the stomach into the intestine.

Biliopancreatic diversion – with duodenal switch Stomach is partially resected Ileum is attached to the pyloric sphincter (duodenum and jejunum are completely bypassed) The bypassed small bowel (duodenum and jejunum) is attached to the ileum to create a 75-100cms common loop
