Protecting People from Premature Death Automated External Defibrillators
Slide 2-

Helping those who help save lives! Developed by the AED Instructor Foundation www.aedif.org
Slide 3-

The Reality of Life… …someday everyone will die!
Slide 4-

The Problem… Premature Death! Peter Safar, MD “…hearts & brains too good to die.”

Slide 6-

Causes of Death Despite reductions in other causes… …sudden deaths continue to rise! 350,000 Annual U.S. Deaths
Slide 7-

To better understand Sudden Death and how to counter it… How the Heart Works
Slide 8-

How the Heart Works
Slide 9-

… generates a pumping action that produces blood pressure… How the Heart Works cont’d…
Slide 10-

…and sends oxygen carrying red blood cells to the brain How the Heart Works cont’d…
Slide 11-

There is a difference between a… Heart Attack and… …Sudden Death (Cardiac Arrest)
Slide 12-

Heart Attack! I Blocked Coronary Artery Damaged area of Heart Muscle …but the heart continues to beat
Slide 13-

Signs & Symptoms (may have one or more) Chest Pain/Discomfort Radiation to Arm, Neck or Jaw Profuse Sweating Difficulty Breathing Fearful, Confused or Irritable Denial of Symptoms The patient may or may not survive… He needs the EMS System ASAP! Heart Attack! cont’d…
Slide 14-

Sudden Death (Cardiac Arrest) Chaotic “quivering” but NO heartbeat Ventricular Fibrillation (V-Fib) …often following a Heart Attack
Slide 15-

Sometimes… Electrocution Hypothermia Comotia Cordis Long Q-T Syndrome Congenital Drug Overdose Near Drowning Arrhythmia and/or Random Event …V-fib can occur totally unrelated to a Heart Attack Sudden Death (Cardiac Arrest)
Slide 16-

Symptoms of V-Fib Life or death is now a matter of TIME… Unconscious No heartbeat No breathing Looks terribly sick & discolored Resulting in NO oxygen to the brain
Slide 17-

Some Oxygen 0 minutes Sudden Death No brain damage at this point…
Slide 18-

No Oxygen 10-12 minutes Brain Death Irreversible Brain Damage!
Slide 19-

Ventricular Fibrillation “Electrical Anarchy” 50-60% of sudden deaths are caused by VF
Slide 20-

Defibrillation “Re-boot” the Heart “ Electricity” The Way to Correct V-Fib…
Slide 21-

Police, Fire and/or EMS… …can’t always be there fast enough. It’s About Time
Slide 22-

Survival is reduced by 10% for each minute that defibrillation is delayed 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 10 15 20 25 30 On-site action is essential to life…

But, if no breathing nor signs of circulation… will only temporarily deliver some oxygen to the brain. It doesn’t correct the problem. CPR V-Fib needs Defibrillation!
